As Time Goes By
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension
Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mister Einstein's theory
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax, relieve the tension
And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed

You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you"
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by

Moonlight and love songs never out of date
Hearts full of passion, jealousy, and hate
Woman needs man and man must have his mate
That no one can deny

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die

The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the classic song "As Time Goes By" by Bing Crosby is both an observation and a commentary on the fast-paced advancements of technology and science during the 20th century. The singer acknowledges that while these advancements seem exciting, it can also be overwhelming and unnerving. The words "Fourth dimension" is a reference to Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, which was groundbreaking at the time. Despite all these advancements, the singer notes that people still need a break from it all and must take time to relax.

In the chorus, the song takes a more philosophical turn, emphasizing the importance of the "fundamental things" that will always remain relevant through time. Love, specifically, is the focal point here, as the lyrics mention how a kiss is still a kiss, and as long as there are lovers, the words "I love you" will never fall out of use. The final verse reinforces this idea by stating that no matter how much times change, the universal human desires and struggles remain the same. The song's overall message is that although the world might evolve and change, the things that make life meaningful will always stay the same.

You are wrong. There are many best voices: Tony Bennett, Andy Willams, Jack Jones, Eddie Fischer and so forth. There is no best singer of all history, and similar voices like Pat Boone´s. Regards,
