Christmas Carols 1
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa la la la la, la la la la
Tis the season to be jolly
Fa la la la la, la la la la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa la la, la la la, la la la
Troll the ancient Yuletide carol
Fa la la la la, la la la la

See the blazing Yule before us
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Strike the harp and join the chorus
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Follow me in merry measure
Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la
While I tell of Yuletide treasure
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

(Away in a manger, no crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus, asleep in the hay)

The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes
I love thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by the cradle till morning is nigh

I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas day, in the morning

Pray whither sailed those ships all three?
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
Pray whither sailed those ships all three?
On Christmas day, in the morning

Oh, they sailed into Bethlehem
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
Oh, they sailed into Bethlehem
On Christmas day, in the morning

And all the bells on earth shall ring
On Christmas day, on Christmas day

And all the bells on earth shall ring
On Christmas day, in the morning

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's Christmas Carols 2 are a compilation of traditional Christmas songs. The first verse starts with "Deck the halls with boughs of holly," which is a traditional Welsh Christmas Carol. Holly, an evergreen plant, is a symbol of everlasting life and has been used in decorating homes for Christmas since the Middle Ages. The next line "tis the season to be jolly" refers to the festive mood during the holiday season. "Fa la la la la, la la la la" is a refrain without a specific meaning, often used in Christmas songs. The third line "Don we now our gay apparel" suggests dressing up with colorful and festive clothing for the occasion. The final line "troll the ancient Yuletide carol" means to sing the age-old Christmas carols. Yuletide is a term used for the Christmas season that originated from the Viking Yule festival.

The second verse talks about the "blazing Yule," or the log that was traditionally burned during the Christmas season, keeping the house warm and bright. The line "strike the harp and join the chorus" suggests musical festivities along with group singing. The third line of the verse continues with the line from the previous verse, asking everyone to follow the singer's merry measure or tune. The final line talks about the Yuletide treasure or the joyous moments of the festival. The third verse is a combination of different carols, starting with "Away in a Manger," a popular Christmas hymn that describes the story of the birth of Jesus. The second line of the verse refers to the cattle present in the manger where Jesus was born. The remaining lines are about the singer talking to Jesus and expressing his love.

The last verse is about "I Saw Three Ships," another traditional Christmas carol whose origin is unknown. The song tells the story of three ships that sailed into Bethlehem. The final line talks about the bells ringing all over the earth on the morning of Christmas day.

Thank you! This was my favourite way back in the early 1950's. (Loved Lindsay's little voice, and it was great hearing all the boys together with their Dad!) "The Snowman" always made me cry. And, the wonderful harmonizing when they all sing together!
