Comin
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I'm feeling blue and when I'm feeling low
Then I start to think about the happiest man I know
He doesn't mind the snow and he doesn't mind the rain
But all December you will hear him at your window pane
Singing again and again and again and again and again

Christmas is a coming and the bells begin to ring
The holly's in the window and the birds begin to sing
Now I don't take time to worry and don't take time to fret
And the more you give at Christmastime the more you get
God bless you, gentlemen, God bless you
The more you give at Christmastime the more you get

Christmas is a coming and the egg is in the nog
Please give a friendly man a friendly little dog
If you haven't got a friendly dog, a friendly cat'll do
If you haven't got a friendly cat, may God bless you
God bless you, gentlemen, God bless you
If you haven't got a friendly, cat may God bless you

Christmas is a coming, the lights are on the tree
How about a turkey leg for poor old me
If you haven't got a turkey leg, a turkey wing will do
If you haven't got a turkey wing, may God bless you
God bless you, gentlemen, God bless you
If you haven't got a turkey wing, may God bless you

Christmas is a coming and the cider's in the keg
If I had a mug of cider then I wouldn't have to beg
If you haven't got a mug of cider, half a mug will do
If you haven't got half a mug, may God bless you
God bless you, gentlemen, God bless you

If you haven't got half a mug, may God bless you
If you haven't got a thing for me, may God bless you

Overall Meaning

The song "Christmas Is A-Comin'" by Bing Crosby is a cheerful tune that celebrates the season of Christmas. The lyrics describe how, when feeling low or blue, one can find solace in the joy and festivities of the holiday season. The singer introduces the happiest man he knows, who is undisturbed by the snow or rain outside, and instead can be heard singing a cheerful tune at someone's window pane. The repetition of the line "singing again and again and again and again and again" emphasizes the joyous and infectious nature of Christmas.

The song then goes on to describe the unmistakable signs of Christmas - the ringing of bells, the holly in the window, and the singing of birds. The singer imparts a valuable lesson that it's important not to worry or fret during the busy holiday season, and that the more you give during Christmastime, the more you will receive. The repeated line "God bless you, gentlemen" highlights the charitable spirit of Christmas and the importance of looking out for one's fellow human beings.

The subsequent verses continue in a similar vein, painting a picture of Christmas and evoking the sights, sounds, and smells that are synonymous with the holiday season. The requests for a friendly dog or cat, a turkey leg or wing, and a mug of cider are made in a jovial tone, conveying a sense of light-heartedness and the spirit of giving. The final line "If you haven't got a thing for me, may God bless you" emphasizes that Christmas is not just about receiving gifts, but about spreading joy and kindness to others.

In conclusion, "Christmas Is A-Comin'" is a festive and uplifting song that celebrates the spirit of Christmas and the joy that it brings. The song reminds us to look beyond our worries and stresses and focus on the joyous occasion of Christmas, spreading kindness and charity to all.

Why has this song not become a classic? I just discovered it now, in December 2021, and is my new favorite Christmas song for this season.

IMO this is one of the more underrated Christmas songs out there. Real catchy tune that should be more popular. I listen to it every Holiday season.

I often visit this track throughout the year, not just Christmas time 😂 Such a great song that reminds me of happy times at Christmas 🎶 My parents always made a big effort at Christmas was I was younger and the memories are very happy. And it's never Christmas until my dad plays this track on his record player. A song that sticks out in my memory more so than any other 🎄 tugs on the heart strings a little x
