Deep Purple
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo
When the deep purple falls
Over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle in the night
In the mist of a memory
You wander all back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Tho' you're gone your love lives on when light beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams

When the deep purple falls
Over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle
In the night
In the mist of a memory
You wander all back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Tho' you're gone your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,

Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo

It's a dream now that once was reality many years ago will be carried in my heart forever.. a love that will never die..

My parents fell in love in 1938 with this being their song. I can't help but think this might have been Bing that they heard sing it. I have my mother's sheet music for this song. Very touching to listen to.

Un Poco Loco

Beautiful Bronx gal Bea Wain (1917-2017) sang her own version at Xmas 1939 (released 23 Dec.), but Bing's version was probable THE song since it was recorded 22 March 1939. Peter De Rose/Mitchell Parish wrote it. But there are a couple more, newer versions...just google "old standard deep purple"! And watch out for UK hardrock band (NOT heavy metal!!!) Deep Purple, who took their name from the favourite song (ie. THIS ONE) of the guitar player's (Richie Blackmore) grandma...nice, eh? And true.

I started listening this and I burst out into tears! It's that Beautiful! It reminded me of when I was a kid, Mr. Crosby was still performing and that Voice! That Voice! It brought something that I thought was gone forever. Thank You.

The WOL

A blast from the past, from when songs had melodies and singers knew how to sing. They don't make them like Der Bingle anymore, unfortunately.

I bought a bunch of 78s and this happened to be one of them, love it. I know what you mean about the peep purple thing lol. Apparently Deep Purple got the name from this tune, it was the guitarist's grandmother favorite tune and she kept asking them if they play this song. So they named the band after it , if thats any consolation.:)

WOW what a vocal range!

Crimson Wolf

This guy was one of the best singers ever. A major influence on the likes of David Bowie and especially on Bryan Ferry.

I watched my parents dance to this lovely song when I was a kid!
