East Side of Heaven
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know an angel on the east side of Heaven
Who lives in a first story room
We meet on a rooftop and dream in the dark
When the lights of New York are in bloom

All through the daytime it's the same old Manhattan
But evening again sets me free
Then I turn off Broadway to the east side of heaven
Where an angel waits for me

All through the daytime it's the same old Manhattan
But evening again sets me free

Then I turn off Broadway to the east side of Heaven
Where an angel waits for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "East Side of Heaven" by Bing Crosby describe the singer's escape from the bustle of Manhattan to a special place where he can have his fantasies come true. He knows an angel that lives in a first story room on the east side of Heaven, and they meet on a rooftop and dream in the dark. It is only when the lights of New York are in bloom and evening comes that he can leave the city behind and turn off Broadway to the east side of Heaven where the angel awaits him.

The song is a love song and uses the contrasting imagery of the bustling daytime Manhattan and his special place on the east side of Heaven. The lyrics suggest that the singer can only truly be free and happy in the company of his beloved angel. The song is ultimately about a yearning for an idyllic escape from the world, where the singer can be with the one he loves.
