Faith Of Our Fathers
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Faith of our fathers, living still
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword
Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
Whenever we hear that glorious Word

(Faith of our fathers, holy faith)
(We will be true to thee 'til death)
Our fathers, chained in prisons dark
Were still in heart and conscience free
How sweet would be their children's fate
If they, like them, could die for thee

(Faith of our fathers, holy faith)
(We will be true to thee 'til death)

Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife
And preach Thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life

(Faith of our fathers, holy faith)
(We will be true to thee 'til death)

Overall Meaning

The song "Faith of Our Fathers" by Bing Crosby is an ode to the steadfastness and perseverance of the faith of the Christian fathers who, despite being tortured, imprisoned, and killed for their faith, remained unwaveringly committed to the Word of God. The first verse talks about how the faith of the fathers still lives on despite the hardships they faced in their quest to practice their beliefs. The second verse highlights the resilience of these fathers who endured physical and mental imprisonment but remained steadfast in heart and conscience. The third verse calls upon the present generation to love both their friends and foes and to preach the message of love expressed in the book of the fathers, i.e., The Bible.

The song's use of metaphor and figurative language makes it an insightful exploration of the Christian faith. The phrase "in spite of dungeon, fire and sword" captures the extent of the persecution that the fathers endured. The phrase "heart and conscience free" indicates that despite being physically imprisoned, their spirits and beliefs endured. The repeating chorus "We will be true to thee 'til death" reinforces the song's affirmation of the unwavering commitment of the fathers to the faith they held dear.

Superlatives, all the way around---Sacred Hymn, Glorifying God, Remembering the Martyrs for the Faith, a great Bing vocal--sincerity and conviction. All perfect.

Bing Crosby was truly a gift to this country. We still always listen to this album at Christmas and this is one of my favorite renditions of Faith of Our Fathers. I bet at the time he was active his music and entertainment brought alot of joy and comfort to our troops.

@BigBobber19

I had this on an old 78 glass record. "A" side was I'll Be Home For Christmas. This guy could sing the phone book...what a gift he was!
