Ghost Of A Chance
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I need your love so badly
I love you, oh, so madly
But I don't stand a
Ghost of a chance with you!
I thought at last I'd found you
But other loves surround you
And I don't stand a
Ghost of a chance with you

If you'd surrender
Just for a tender kiss or two
You might discover
that I'm the lover, meant for you
And I'd be true
But what's the good of scheming
I Know I must be dreaming

For I don't stand a
Ghost of a chance with you!

Overall Meaning

In Bing Crosby's Ghost Of A Chance, the singer finds himself in love with someone who seems to be unattainable, expressing his desire for her but ultimately feeling defeated by the pursuit of her affection. He acknowledges the presence of other admirers in her life, recognizing the difficulty of standing out among the competition. Despite this, he still holds out hope that she may reciprocate his feelings if given the chance, even if he may be naive in doing so. Crosby's voice conveys a sense of longing and vulnerability, leaving the listener sympathetic to his plight and rooting for him to find love and happiness.

The lyrics of Ghost Of A Chance are a testament to the common experience of unrequited love and the pain that it can bring. The song has resonated with audiences for decades due to its relatable subject matter, as well as the haunting melody and Crosby's masterful vocal performance. The lyrics convey a sense of helplessness and resignation, as the singer realizes that he may never win over the object of his affection, but still holds onto the hope that he may be able to do so someday.

This whole Record has a very Haunting and atmospheric feeling to it! The flip side of this DARLING Record "Just An Echo" brings Me to tears every time!

@jimcrowley1709

The intro is amazing and set the tone to this one. On some LP reissues this has been cut out and starts with the piano and then the voice

@lecaprice2572

I agree that this is one of Bing's very best !

@dougcampbell7019

I love it! Plus, this is the only version I could find with the 2 line intro (i.e., the complete song)

@mara3842

Chet Baker's version of this song has always been my fav but this one is wonderful too!

And then there was Mildred Bailey's wistful version, recorded in June 1939.

@lecaprice2572

I was always put off by his “modern” recordings since childhood. But discovering his late 20’s and early 30’s proper presentations of songs completely redeemed him in my opinion (at least with regard to those early pure and atmospheric classic interpretations).

If there’s a Ken out there, don’t let your Myrla go. Despite what has happened, fight for each other and never let each other go.
