God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God rest you merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray

(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy)
(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)

In Bethlehem in Jewry
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn

The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn

(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy)
(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)

From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name

(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy)
(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)

Overall Meaning

The song "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is a classic Christmas carol that emphasizes the birth of Jesus, the savior of mankind. The song is an invocation of good tidings and salvation, and it encourages people to rejoice and celebrate the birth of Christ. The first stanza of the song greets the audience with a joyful message, telling them to remain merry and without fear. The second line reminds the audience to remember the birth of Christ, which is the main reason for the holiday season. The third and fourth lines serve as a reminder of Christ's mission on earth, which was to save humanity from the devil.

The second stanza of the song talks about the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The event was significant, as it marked the beginning of the salvation process. Jesus was born to humble parents and was laid in a manger. Throughout the stanza, Mary's role is highlighted, and her devotion to the birth of her child is duly noted. The entire stanza centers on the humility of the event and the divine nature of the child.

In the final stanza, an angel is introduced, who brings the news of the birth of Jesus to the shepherds who were watching their flocks at night. The angel tells them that the messiah has been born in Bethlehem. This stanza reinforces the idea that the birth of Jesus was a divine event and that it was significant enough to be announced by an angel.

Repent and trust in Jesus. We all deserve Hell for our sins, such as lying lusting coveting and more. We can't save ourselves, but Jesus can save us. He died on the cross to save us for our sins and rose from the grave defeating death and Hell. You must put your faith in him only. He is the only way to Heaven. Repent and trust in Jesus.

80 odd years later it's still the greatest

@83nuvola

I certainly don't mean to underestimate how good Crosby's voice was but ... I love the orchestral arrangement and the choir. They are just amazing, I would love to find more music like that.

@jamesleopard8518

Well, it sounds like the choral musical director, and the chorus people

@83nuvola

@@jamesleopard8518 I know that very well. I think it was obvious, but maybe it's not. So, what i meant is: i would love to find more music with similar arrangements and similar choir performance.
