God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God rest you merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray

(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy)
(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)

In Bethlehem in Jewry
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn

The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn

(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy)
(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)

From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name

(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)

(Comfort and joy)
(Oh, tidings of comfort and joy)

Overall Meaning

The song "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is a classic Christmas carol that emphasizes the birth of Jesus, the savior of mankind. The song is an invocation of good tidings and salvation, and it encourages people to rejoice and celebrate the birth of Christ. The first stanza of the song greets the audience with a joyful message, telling them to remain merry and without fear. The second line reminds the audience to remember the birth of Christ, which is the main reason for the holiday season. The third and fourth lines serve as a reminder of Christ's mission on earth, which was to save humanity from the devil.

The second stanza of the song talks about the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The event was significant, as it marked the beginning of the salvation process. Jesus was born to humble parents and was laid in a manger. Throughout the stanza, Mary's role is highlighted, and her devotion to the birth of her child is duly noted. The entire stanza centers on the humility of the event and the divine nature of the child.

In the final stanza, an angel is introduced, who brings the news of the birth of Jesus to the shepherds who were watching their flocks at night. The angel tells them that the messiah has been born in Bethlehem. This stanza reinforces the idea that the birth of Jesus was a divine event and that it was significant enough to be announced by an angel.

Mom (born in 1958) used to put on his Christmas CD every single December of my childhood and teenage. So do I now with my tiny daughters. Hope they'll be able to feel Christmas as I did when I was little. Greets from Italy and merry Christmas preparations and days to you all!

Yes, I want to grab my cleaning cloth, and check my needle, as it could be just dust, or bum-fluff that's causing those adulterated sounds that were misc to our ears when we used those old record players. What we put off better HiFis was the fact you could better hear all the scratches, so it was the record, you had to go back on the cheap HiFi.

Bing made this recording on June 8, 1942. He was recovering from a rather severe head cold at the time. If you listen closely, you can hear a slight "stuffiness" in his voice due to nasal congestion.
