OUT WHERE THEY SAY, 'LET US BE GAY' I'M GOING HOLLYWOOD I'LL BALLYHOO GREETINGS TO YOU I'M GOING HOLLYWOOD SAY, WHILE YOU SLEEPYHEADS ARE IN THAT HAY I'LL BE DANCING I'M GONNA BE DANCING WITH A SUN-KISSED BABY AND I'M ON MY WAY HERE'S MY BERET I'M GOING HOLLYWOOD

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's song "Going Hollywood" are about the excitement and anticipation of heading to Hollywood in pursuit of fame and fortune. The "out where they say, 'let us be gay'" refers to the glamour and carefree lifestyle that Hollywood is known for. The singer declares that he is going to join that world and "ballyhoo" his way to success.

He sends his "greetings" to those left behind and declares that while they are sleeping, he will be dancing with a "sun-kissed baby," another sign of the exciting and exotic world he is entering. He finishes by proudly displaying his beret and declaring that he is off to Hollywood.

The lyrics reflect the glamor and excitement surrounding Hollywood in the 1930s, when the song was written. The Hollywood industry was booming, and young performers flocked to the city in the hopes of making it big. The song is a reflection of that dream and the excitement of those who pursued it.

Thank you for the scene that introduced the title song, Going Hollywood, from the film of the same name, starring Bing Crosby and Marion Davies. Just love that scene. The singing porter was Sam McDaniel, Hattie's brother, if you notice a bit of a resemblance.

Of all the great crooners/singers of the 20th century, Crosby has the purest and nearest to perfection in that voice. No one like him.

@ZooxMaze

HaHa... yes, I noticed that too !! Same feeling with the Beatles - especially, Paul and John... "whooo-ooo" !! To try to put into words exactly what that quality is, is illusive - yet, I think the body language of whatever that bobbing-twitchy, shruggy-playful, flaunty-jaunty manoevre is... it conveys the same universal message which is ultimately playful and yeah - makes us smile to see it in action.

What's more - is that I think these are the only entertainers who spring to mind as being even able to carry-off such an antic so naturally and in such good humour ;) It takes a special breed...

@sonofthedesert69

1:56 the guy singing is sam mcdaniel who was the older brother of hattie mcdaniel who was the first African-American woman to win an Oscar. Sam was also the only African American to appear on I Love Lucy.
