Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled."
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of the favored one.

Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see,
Hail, th'incarnate Deity,
Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!

Hail! the heaven-born
Prince of peace!
Hail! the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the son of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!"

Overall Meaning

The hymn, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, was written by Charles Wesley in 1739. It was originally named “Hark! How All the Welkin Rings” and had ten stanzas. However, in 1754, George Whitefield made some changes to the lyrics and it became the version we know and sing today. The music for the hymn was composed in 1840 by Felix Mendelssohn, which was initially composed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press. The hymn starts with the announcement of the newborn King and the rejoicing among the angels, which then extends with invitation to all people of the world to rise up and share in the triumph of the occasion. This is illustrated in the lines: "Joyful, all ye nations, rise / Join the triumph of the skies."The second verse of the hymn celebrates Christ, the everlasting Lord, who was born to the Virgin Mary. It emphasizes the idea that Jesus was both God and man, and urges the listeners to "Hail, th'incarnate Deity". The third verse focuses on Christ as the “Prince of Peace”, who brings light and life to all those who believe in Him.

Overall, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is heralded as the Savior of the world. It emphasizes his divinity and humanity, as well as the joy of his arrival for all people.
