I'm Through With Love
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have given you my true love,
But you love a new love.
What am I supposed to do now
With you now, you're through?
You'll be on your merry way
And there's only this to say:
I'm through with love
I'll never fall again.
Said adieu to love
Don't ever call again.
For I must have you or no one
And so I'm through with love.
I've locked my heart
I'll keep my feelings there.
I have stocked my heart
With icy, frigid air.
And I mean to care for no one
Because I'm through with love.
Why did you lead me
To think you could care?
You didn't need me
For you had your share
Of slaves around you
To hound you and swear
With deep emotion and devotion to you.
Goodbye to spring and all it meant to me
It can never bring the thing that used to be.
For I must have you or no one
And so I'm through with love.
Why did you lead me
To think you could care?
You didn't need me for you had your share
Of slaves around you to hound you and swear
With deep emotion and devotion to you.
Goodbye to spring and all it meant to me
It can never bring the thing that used to be.

For I must have you or no one
And so I'm through with love.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's song "I'm Through With Love" express the feelings of someone who has had their heart broken and is now resigned to never falling in love again. The singer has given their true love to the person they are addressing, but that person has moved on with someone new, leaving the singer alone and heartbroken. The singer feels betrayed and wonders what they are supposed to do now that the person they love is through with them.

In the chorus, the singer declares that they are through with love and swear to never fall in love again, and they have locked away their feelings and replaced them with icy, frigid air. The singer has been led to believe that the person they love cared for them, but it turns out that they did not need the singer, as they already had others to devote themselves to. The singer recognizes that they can never go back to the way things were and must move on, even though it hurts to say goodbye to what once meant so much to them.

This song explores themes of heartbreak, betrayal, and loss, as well as the decision to protect oneself from further pain by rejecting love altogether. It conveys a sense of sadness and melancholy, but also a determination to move forward and find strength in one's independence.

A first-rate song. Bing is in prime voice here. The stoic piano reinforces his resolve to be through with love, but as that music soldiers on it is contrasted with the string section which reveals that his locked-up, icy heart is still broken. What a shame great songs such as this go under-heard today.

Funny seeing you in the wild here Mr. Garrison. Glad to know politics isn't the only thing we have in common!

@Trombonology

Bing, in his "ardent young lover" days captures the lyrics' mood and sentiment perfectly. My favorite vocal version, of course.
