I Found A Million Dollar Baby
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was a lucky April shower
It was the most convenient door
I found a million dollar baby
In a five and ten cent store
The rain continued for an hour
I hung around for three or four
Around a million dollar baby
In a five and ten cent store

She was selling China
And when she made those eyes
I kept buying China
Until the crowd got wise

Incidentally
If you should run into a shower
Just step inside my cottage door
And meet the million-dollar baby
From the five and ten cent store

Love comes along like a popular song
Any time or anywhere at all
Rain or sunshine
Spring or fall
Say, you'll never know when it may say hello
In a very unexpected place
For example, take my case

She was selling China
And when she made those eyes
I kept buying China
Until the crowd got wise

Incidentally
If you should run into a shower, oh
Step inside my cottage door

And meet my million-dollar baby
From the five and ten cent store

Overall Meaning

Bing Crosby's "I Found A Million Dollar Baby (in a five and ten cent store)" is a love song that presents the idea that love can be found in unexpected places, much like how the singer finds his "million dollar baby" in an inexpensive retail store during a spring shower. Through the lyrics, the singer describes how they stumbled upon a small five and ten cent store during a rainy day in April. It is here where they saw a woman selling china, who they immediately became smitten with. The singer then spends hours gazing at the woman before finally departing the store. The song's refrain suggests that love is unexpected and can come along like a popular song, "Anytime or anywhere at all."

The song's premise is built around the idea that love can be found in the most unexpected places, which is a common sentiment seen in love songs throughout history. The use of a five and ten cent store further emphasizes this notion since these types of stores were often considered among the most affordable and unremarkable shops in America, making it the perfect setting for a love story. The April shower imagery, which typically symbolizes renewal and growth, serves as a metaphor for the new beginning that the singer experiences as he embarks on a journey to find love. The line "Rain or sunshine, spring or fall" also highlights the idea that love can appear at any time throughout the year.

I love this song.  it was my Mom and Dad's "song" because they first saw each other in a 5 & 10 Cent store in Macon, Georgia...  So this song is really a true story of their love.  It's my mom's birthday today and I think she'd love this tribute to them!

The was My grandparents song as well they met in a dime store my grandma was working at in Chicago after my grandfather returned from WWII. My grandfather passed a few years ago and my grandmother just joined him. Hope they are together listening to it now❤️

My mom went to work for my Dad who opened his dimestore in 1939. They soon married. With a twinkle in her eye, my mom would sometimes sing this song while washing dishes...🎶🎗️❤️

I am 65. When I was a young child my parents had a record store in Manhattan, which went bust when I was about 5. The only thing we had left was a great collection of victrolas and boxes and boxes of records. Among which were many Bing Crosby albums, including ones from the late 20s and early 30s, when his voice was truly magnificent. I have the records still, and plan on copying them onto CDs. Will try to post them when I get the opportunity. Thanks for posting.

This song was written about the Woolworth heiress, Barbara Hutton. Her father was E. F. Hutton, her grandfather was Frank Woolworth, owner of all the Woolworth Stores. She was referred to as the poor little rich girl and really did have a rather sad and lonely life. Great song.

Her father was Franklyn Hutton, the brother of E.F. Hutton (Edward Frances Hutton). Her aunt was Marjorie Merriweather Post.
