I Love You
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I had a nickel, I know what I would do,
I'd spend it all for candy and I'd give it all to you!
I'd spend it all for candy and give it all to you,
'Cause that's how much I love you, baby,
That's how much I love you, baby!

If you were a picture I'd hang you up on the wall,
Sit back where I could see you and I'd never move at all!
Sit back where I could see you, never move at all!
'Cause that's how much I love you, baby,
That's how much I love you, baby!

If you were a kitten with pretty glossy fur,
I'd take you up and stroke you and listen to you purr!
I'd take you up and stroke you and listen to you purr!
Mm, that's how much I love you, baby,
That's how much I love you, dear!

And if you were a tiger, I'd hang around your den,
And pester you, my honey, until you let me in!
And pester you, my honey, 'til you let me in!
'Cause that's how much I love you, baby,
That's how much I love you, baby!

Baby, if you were a horsefly and I an old grey mare,
I'd stand and let you bite me and I'd never move a hair!
I'd stand and let you bite me, never move a hair!
'Cause that's how much I love you, baby,
That's how much I love you, baby!

If you want to marry, now le' me tell you what,
We'll go and find a parson and I'll let him tie the knot!
We'll go and find a parson and let him tie the knot!
'Cause that's how much I love you, baby,
That's how much I love you, dear!

When I says I loves ya, honey Chile,
I leans on ya a little bit!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bing Crosby's "I Love You" describe the singer's intense love and devotion for their significant other. The repeated phrase "that's how much I love you, baby" emphasizes the extent of their feelings, and they use playful comparisons to express their devotion. The first stanza describes spending all their money on candy for their loved one, while the second stanza compares their partner to a picture they would hang on the wall and admire forever. In the third stanza, the singer compares their love to taking care of a kitten with glossy fur or even being persistent with a tiger just to be close to their significant other. In the fourth stanza, the comparison to a horsefly that bites reflects the singer's willingness to endure discomfort for the sake of their loved one.

The final stanza suggests that the singer is committed to their partner and willing to get married, perhaps implying that they will stick together no matter what. The line "when I says I loves ya, honey Chile, I leans on ya a little bit" adds a touch of humor to the song and further emphasizes the depth of feeling.

It should be noted that Bing recorded 2 songs entitled "I Love You" in 1944... this one recorded on 2/11/1944, written by Cole Porter, the other song entitled "I Love You (Ich Liebe Dich) written by George Forrest, Robert Wright & Edvard Grieg on 12/15/1944 also with John Scott Trotter. Of course the Porter tune is the classic.
