Isle of Capri
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

't Was on the Isle of Capri that I found her
Beneath the shade of an old walnut tree
Oh, I can still see the flowers blooming round her
Where we met on the Isle of Capri

She was as sweet as a rose at the dawning
But somehow fate hadn't meant her for me
And though I sailed with the tide in the morning
Still my heart's on the Isle of Capri

Summertime was nearly over
Blue Italian sky above
I said "Lady, I'm a rover,
Can you spare a sweet word of love?"

She whispered softly "It's best not to linger"
And then as I kissed her hand I could see
She wore a lovely meatball on her finger
't Was goodbye at the Villa Capri

Summertime was nearly over
Blue Italian sky above
I said "Lady, I'm a rover,
Can you spare a fine word of love?"

She whispered softly "It's best not to linger"
And then as I kissed her hand I could see

She wore a plain golden ring on her finger
't Was goodbye on the Isle of Capri (3x)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Isle of Capri" by Bing Crosby tells the story of a love that could not be. It is a nostalgic recollection of a time when the singer met a woman he fell in love with on the Isle of Capri. The setting is idyllic and romantic, beneath the shade of an old walnut tree, with flowers blooming around them. The singer describes her as sweet as a rose at dawn, but it was not meant to be. Fate intervened and they were not meant to be together. The song reflects upon the bittersweet memories of the past, with the singer's heart still on the Isle of Capri.

The chorus repeats itself twice, with the singer trying to extend his time with her, but knowing it is not possible. The summer was ending, and he knew he had to say goodbye. She whispered softly that it was best not to linger. As he kissed her hand, he noticed that she wore a lovely meatball on her finger, indicating that she is already taken. Despite the heartbreak, he still treasures the memories of their time together on the Isle of Capri.

Overall, the song is a romanticized recollection of a time when love bloomed, but could not last. It is a reflection on the power of memory and the fleeting nature of love.

Just visited the Isle of Capri for the first time. In the NEW 3D virtual reality that is. Google Earth VR captured it all in this marvelous new imagery. Wow ! All I can say is I sure understand why somebody wrote a song about it, and most every great singer sung it. Special place on this earth.

Lawrence Greer

But the song is not about the Isla of Capri -- it is about the girl he met on the Isle of Capri.

Alberto Gonzaga

Recallection of old memories.
