It Had To Be You
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do I do just as you say?
Why must I just give you your way?
Why do I sigh?
Why do I try to forget?

It must have been that something lovers call "Fate"
Kept on saying I had to wait
I saw them all
Just couldn't fall till we met

It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around and finally found the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue
And even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you

Some others I've seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss, but they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill

With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you, it had to be you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bing Crosby's song "It Had To Be You" depict the feeling of helplessness one feels when they find themselves in love. The singer is questioning why they are so compliant to their lover's wishes and why they try to forget them when they are not around. However, they realize that such behavior is inevitable because of the undeniable feeling of destiny or "fate." The singer describes how they have met other people but haven't fallen in love with them until they met their current partner. They acknowledge their partner's flaws but still love them.

The song exudes a joyful and hopeful tone that sounds almost like an ode to love and the beauty of falling in love. It illustrates the feeling of finally finding "the one" after a long time, expressing gratitude for this serendipitous moment. Although the lyrics' meaning is rather straightforward, it provides a sense of optimism, romance, and tenderness.

Definitely, and Sinatra wanted to be like Crosby, but ironically he was super far from that soft crooning.

In my opinion, it'd be:

Al Bowlly
Lee Morse
Bing Crosby
Ruth Etting
Dean Martin
Frank Sinatra
Ella Fitzgerald
ABISM
Louis Armstrong

What would I give to go back in time just to see Bing perform live...

Lol I’d like to too but being Black means there’s a gamble on a “Whites Only” sign

@WacoDraco Bing didn’t support that, he was a good friend of Louis Armstrong and made sure he was treated and paid well whenever they entertained together. He also was asked once why he never tipped his black golf assistant and the black man said “he’s putting my son through college.”

Gregory McGuire

Fantastic. Bing and Buddy are perfect together.

Edwin Lamarr "Buddy" Cole was a great keyboard technician and all around pianist/organist. A great talent!

Reminds me a lot of my favorite pianist, Nat King Cole.
