Love Me Tonight
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, what a night for romancing,
Stars in the sky above
This is our chance for sweet romance
Let's make this a night of love

Here we are together, the moon is hanging low
There's magic in its silvery light
It seems to say the time is right
Love me tonight.

Life is so uncertain and no one seems to know
How long we have to linger on
Tomorrow we may both be gone
Love me tonight

Oh let me feel your arms
And let me feel your kiss
Then if this great big world must end
Oh let it end like this

My lips are yours forever, my heart is in your hand
My love is yours to have, to hold
Don't wait until the moon is old
Love me tonight.

Oh let me feel your arms
And let me feel your kiss
Then if this great big world must end
Oh let it end like this

My lips are yours forever, my heart is in your hand
My love is yours to have, to hold
Don't wait until the moon is old
Love me tonight.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby’s “Love Me Tonight” describe a perfect night for romance under the stars. The singer urges their partner to seize the opportunity to engage in sweet romance and make it a night to remember. The moonlight adds magic to the atmosphere and seems to signify that the timing is right for them to express their love. The singer acknowledges that life is unpredictable and that they may not have much time together. They want to cherish this moment and make the most of it. They implore their partner to hold them tight and give them a kiss, so that if the world were to end, they would want to end it in each other’s arms.

The singer’s desire for love and connection is palpable throughout the song. They mention how their lips are forever their partner's, and their heart is in their hands. The song seems to center around the idea of seizing opportunities and living in the present moment, understanding that we never know what tomorrow may bring. The singer is urging their partner to take their chance at love and not wait too long, or for circumstances to change. The song is a beautiful plea for love and togetherness, set against the backdrop of a serene, starry night.

One of my favorite Bing sides of this period. Though he was still very much in his "Ardent Lover" interpretive phase, he shows a restraint that contrasts so effectively with the very direct, for the times, lyrics. Tram responds accordingly with a lovely, subdued solo. An atmospheric gem, and the lyrics, "Life is so uncertain, and no one seems to know/How long we have to linger on/Tomorrow we may both be gone/Love me tonight" and "Then if this great big world must end/Oh let it end like this" are so representative of the existential philosophy that so many people adopted in the cataclysm of the Great Depression.

@Henri de Lagardère Indeed! -- à la "If I Could Be With You."

And if this great big world really does end, this will be the way, neither with a bang nor a whimper but an invitation à la Armstrong: [2:57] "won't you lóve me tonight?!"

Not an easy melody to follow, if the task of singing it falls on your shoulders. Bing was in between styles in 1932; that may have increased the challenge.

Bing of course always terrific but for me the Annette Hanshaw version just drips with pathos .

The annette henshaw version was my wife and I our wedding song .
