New San Antonio Rose
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Deep within my heart lies a melody
A song of old San Antone
Where in dreams I live with a memory
Beneath the stars all alone

It was there I found beside the Alamo
Enchantment strange as the blue, up above
A moonlit pass that only she would know
Still hears my broken song of love

Moon in all your splendor know only my heart
Call back my Rose, Rose of San Antone
Lips so sweet and tender like petals falling apart
Speak once again of my love, my own

Broken song, empty words I know
Still live in my heart all alone
For that moonlit pass by the Alamo
And Rose, my Rose of San Antone

Broken song, empty words I know
Still live in my heart all alone

For that moonlit pass by the Alamo
And Rose, my Rose of San Antone

Overall Meaning

The song "San Antonio Rose" by Bing Crosby is a classic ode to lost love and bygone days. Bing sings about the beautiful memories he has of San Antonio, a city known for its rich history and vibrant culture. The melody of the song is deep within his heart, and it brings him back to a dreamy, moonlit night when he was alone under the stars, lost in his own thoughts and memories.

He recalls a time when he wandered alone by the Alamo, where he found enchantment and love with a woman he calls Rose. The moon, which gave these memories their ethereal quality, was witness to their love and still holds a special place in his heart. Bing's love was so strong for Rose that even after all these years, he still remembers her sweet lips and the sound of her voice. His love and longing for her are captured in the broken song that he still sings today, as her memory remains etched in his heart and mind forever.

Overall, Bing sings a song that evokes nostalgia and the power of memory through his recollections of San Antonio and his lost loves. The melody conjures up a sense of longing and melancholy, and the lyrics suggest that love can endure even when everything else has faded away.

I simply love Bing, and this Bob Wills song is perfect for him.........and I'm no musical expert, though a bit of one when it comes to all things Bing, BUT-------I always wondered how much the song would have been a colossal hit, had the cadence been a touch faster, much like Bob Wills Western Swing dictated. Love Bing, but wish his brother would have picked up and swung the baton faster!!!!!!!!! Great song and rendition, but could have been 10 X better, in my humble opinion.
