Out of This World
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're clear out of this world
When I'm looking at you,
I hear out of this world
The music that no mortal ever knew.

You're right out of a book,
The fairy tale I read when I was so high;
No armored knight out of a book
Could find a more enchanted Lorelei than I.

After waiting so long for the right time,
After reaching so long for a star,
All at once from the long and lonely night time,
And despite time, here you are!

I'd fly out of this world
If you said we were through,
So let me fly out of this world

And spend the next eternity or two with you;
I'll spend the next eternity or two with you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's song Out of This World describe a moment when the singer is taken aback by the beauty and enchanting qualities of the person they are looking at. The singer describes the person as being "clear out of this world" and hearing "the music that no mortal ever knew," which suggests that this person is mystical and possesses a unique quality that goes beyond what is humanly possible. The singer also compares this person to a character from a fairy tale, saying that no armored knight out of a book could find a more enchanted Lorelei (which is a reference to a siren-like figure from German folklore).

The second verse of the song describes the singer's feelings of finally finding this person after waiting and reaching for so long. Despite the wait, the person has arrived "all at once from the long and lonely night time," which suggests that this person was worth waiting for. The singer feels so strongly about this person that they are willing to fly out of this world and spend eternity with them if they were to say they were through.

Overall, the lyrics of Out of This World convey a sense of wonder and enchantment towards a person who possesses an otherworldly quality. The singer is clearly infatuated with this person and would do anything to be with them forever.

"Ya better not let mom hear ya say that.")
I had no idea that what may be my favorite Harold Arlen tune (lyrics by Johnny Mercer) was originally written as the title song for this rather sweet little comedy (which has a plot-thread that Mel Brooks would utilize 20 years later in "The Producers").
Bracken, who is barely remembered today, was a very popular and gifted comedic actor, and he never lost his fastball:
In 1983, he appeared near the end of "National Lampoon's Vacation," as the fictionalized Disney-figure, Roy Wally, and stole the scene he shares with Chevy Chase.
I'm especially struck by the relaxed, yet highly-emotional nature of Bing Crosby's singing here:
It's almost as though this unique situation (he's off-camera, as in any recording date, but he's also providing the voice for someone else who IS being looked at) has freed him up to lose himself entirely in the act of singing, and is thereby allowed to create great, unaffected beauty.
