Red Sails In The Sunset
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Was down where fisher folk gathered
I wandered far from the throng
I heard a fisher girl singin'
And this refrain was her song

Red sails in the sunset way out on the sea
Oh carry my loved one home safely to me
He sailed at the dawning, all day I've been blue
Red sails in the sunset, I'm trusting in you

Swift wings you must borrow, make straight for the shore
We marry tomorrow and he goes sailing no more
Red sails in the sunset way out on the sea
Oh carry my loved one home safely to me

Swift wings you must borrow, make straight for the shore
We marry tomorrow and he goes sailing no more

Red sails in the sunset way out on the sea
Oh carry my loved one home safely to me

When my great grandfather was a kid he lived in the basement of his parents house, and he didn’t have any friends at the time and when he heard the song red sails in the sunset, he made a little toy boat with red sails, and that was his friend, and when he was old enough, he married my great grandmother, and he moved out of his parents basement, but forgot the boat on the windowsill, and his parents threw it out, and he always wanted a ship with red sails, my great grandfather has been gone for about 11 years now, but my great grandmother is still alive and well, and when she told me this story I went on a hunt to find a stained glass ship with red sails that she could put in her windowsill, and luckily I found one for her to remind her of her dear husband.
