She's Funny That Way
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm not much to look at, nothin' to see
Just glad I'm livin' and happy to be
I got a woman, crazy for me
She's funny that way

I can't save a dollar, ain't worth a cent
She'd never holler, she'd live in a tent
I got a woman, crazy for me
She's funny that way

Though she'd love to work and slave for me every day
She'd be so much better off if I went away

But why should I leave her, why should I go?
She'd be unhappy without me, I know
I got a woman, crazy for me
She's funny that way

When I hurt her feelin's once in a while
Her only answer is one little smile

I got a woman, crazy for me
She's funny that way

Overall Meaning

In this classic love song, the singer opens up about the woman in his life who is completely devoted to him despite all of his flaws. He admits that he isn't much to look at, and he doesn't have much money. However, he has a woman who is crazy for him despite all of that. She is always ready to support him, no matter what. In fact, she would work and slave for him every day if he let her. Yet, the singer recognizes that she would probably be better off if he just left. Nevertheless, he stays because he knows that she would be unhappy without him. She always forgives him when he hurts her, and her response is always a little smile. The singer recognizes that she is funny in her devotion to him, but ultimately he is grateful for her and the love she shows him.

The lyrics of this song really speak to the depth of the love that the woman has for the singer. She is willing to put up with anything, and nothing can shake her devotion. It is interesting, too, that the singer recognizes that she would be better off without him, but he cannot bring himself to leave her. This could be interpreted in a number of ways - perhaps he is equally devoted to her, or maybe he recognizes that he needs her love and support in order to be happy. Regardless of the reason, it is clear that their love is strong and enduring.

Bing's on top of his form here. Probably my favourite version of this tune. Great tempo, swinging rhythm and the singer's not bad either.

Who's on the 88s? Pederson? Defs not Nat Cole, not enough gin in the sound. Sounds a bit like Leon Russel, but he would have been like 3 years old at the time
