Sweet Georgia Brown
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She just got here yesterday,
Things are hot here now they say,
There's a new gal in town.
Gals are jealous, there's no doubt.
All the guys just rave about
Sweet, Sweet Georgia Brown.
And ever since she came, the common folks all claim, say
No gal made has got a shade on Sweet Georgia Brown.
Two left feet, but oh, so neat has Sweet Georgia Brown.
They all sigh and wanna die for Sweet Georgia Brown,
I'll tell you just why, you know I don't lie (not much!).
It's been said she knocks 'em dead when she lands in town.
Since she came why it's a shame how she's cooled 'em down.
Fellas that she can't get must be fellas that she ain't met.
Georgia claimed her, Georgia named her, Sweet Georgia Brown.

All you gals will get the blues,
All you pals will surely lose.
And, there's but one excuse.
Now I've told you who she was,
And I've told you what she does,
Still, give this gal her dues.
This pretty maiden's prayer is answered anywhere

No gal made has got a shade on Sweet Georgia Brown.
Two left feet, but oh, so neat has Sweet Georgia Brown.
They all sigh and wanna die for Sweet Georgia Brown,
I'll tell you just why, you know I don't lie (not much!).
All those tips the porter slips to Sweet Georgia Brown
They buy clothes at fashion shows for one dollar down.
Fellas, won'tcha tip your hats.

Oh boy, ain't she the cats?
Who's that mister, ain't her sister, it's Sweet Georgia Brown.

Overall Meaning

"Sweet Georgia Brown" is a classic jazz song recorded by Bing Crosby in 1956. The lyrics of the song describe the arrival of a new girl in town, Sweet Georgia Brown, who is causing quite a stir among both men and women alike. The song suggests that all the guys are raving about her and the gals are jealous. However, despite having two left feet, she is said to be neat and most desirable among men. It is mentioned that even the common folks are drawn to her. The song is an ode to the beauty and allure of the titular Georgia Brown, and how she has captured the hearts of those around her.

The song also mentions the impact she has had on those around her since her arrival. The fellows who haven't met her yet are evidently missing out, and the women in town are said to be getting the blues as she draws all the attention to herself. The porter tips her well, and her fashion sense is the envy of many in town. Despite her appeal, the song acknowledges her humility and beauty, describing her prayer as answered anywhere.

The amount we've changed as a society in close to 100 years is amazing. The way we talk, act, dress. His voice is different then anyone's is today. It gives me chills when i hear these old 25-60's voices. I cant't imagine what it will be like in another 100 years.

Bing was there at the beginning and many followed! He had a relaxed sense of "cool" long before others!

Most of America knows Bing the Movie Star... especially, as years go by, for "White Christmas..." Very few know that it was his early jazz singing (in the early days of jazz) that put him on the map, and got him to Hollywood. With the exceptions of Armstrong, and perhaps Jolson, the most seminal male singer this country has ever produced.

Have you read Gary Giddins two wonderful books on Bing? Pocketful of Dreams and Swingin’ on a Star. So much music history in these volumes.
