Till We Meet Again
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a song in the land of the lily
Each sweetheart has heard with a sigh
Over high garden walls this sweet echo falls
As a soldier boy whispers goodbye

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu
When the clouds roll by I'll come to you
Then the skies will seem more blue
Down in Lover's Lane, my dearie

Wedding bells will ring so merrily
Ev'ry tear will be a memory
So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again

Though goodbye means the birth of a teardrop
Hello means the birth of a smile
And the smile will erase the tear blighting trace
When we meet in the after awhile

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu
When the clouds roll by I'll come to you
Then the skies will seem more blue
Down in Lover's Lane, my dearie

Wedding bells will ring so merrily
Ev'ry tear will be a memory

So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again

Overall Meaning

Bing Crosby's song Till We Meet Again is a touching ballad that speaks of the sorrow of parting ways with a loved one. The first verse describes a soldier boy bidding farewell to his sweetheart as he prepares to go off to war. The sweet echo of their love song lingers in the air as they say their goodbyes. The chorus encourages the couple to remain strong in their love for each other until they are reunited, reminding them that their separation is only temporary. The second verse speaks to the universal truth that goodbye comes with tears but hello brings a smile. The line, "And the smile will erase the tear-blighted trace when we meet in the after awhile" is particularly poignant, suggesting that the distance between the couple will eventually be forgotten once they are together again.

The lyrics of Till We Meet Again are universal, speaking to the experience of anyone who has been separated from a loved one. The song was originally written and composed by Richard A. Whiting and Raymond B. Egan in 1918, during World War I. The song became extremely popular during the war, as it spoke to the experience of couples separated by distance and afraid that they may never see each other again. As a result, the song is often associated with the soldiers who fought in World War I, and it continues to be associated with the sacrifices made by military personnel to this day.

That's one of the benefits of growing old - you can wake up with a song from 70 years ago playing in your memory!

My dad taught me and my sister this song and I sang it to my children when they were babies, and I sing this lullaby to my grandbabies to sleep. Reminds me of my dad. He sang this song and would sing the sing "till we meet again" right after. I sing both songs as lullabies.

My grandfather was a musician and singer in a time this song was popular. He met a young woman (my grandmother) at a dance he was playing. That night he took his band and serenaded her with this song. He asked her to marry and she told him to go home and read Ruth in his bible. He found her answer there and they spent their honeymoon in Seven Springs North Carolina where her often played music. He taught me this song and I sing it often at my performances. It sitll brings a tear Ed Terry.
