My dad was on one of the ships that docked there returning soliders of color from WWII. they were grateful to be home and to also start helping to integrate our country often at the loss of lives. Daddy also said that a lot of them felt that they would never see the US again due to combat in WWII. He went onto become one of the first black men to run for County Commissioner here in rural Davie County,NC. He did not win but opened a door of respect for many others.
