World On A String
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got the world on a string
I'm sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love

I've got a song that I sing
I can make the rain go
Any time I move my finger
Lucky me, can't you see, I'm in love

Life's a wonderful thing
As long as I hold the string

I'd be a silly so-and-so
If I should ever let her go

Overall Meaning

In Bing Crosby's classic song "World on a String," the singer expresses his feelings of happiness and contentment. He sings about having the world on a string, sitting on a rainbow, and having the string wrapped around his finger. These metaphors suggest that he is in complete control and that everything is going his way. He is also in love, as evidenced by the repeated refrain of "What a world, what a life, I'm in love."

The second verse further reinforces the idea that he is in control, as he claims that he can even make the rain go with a flick of his finger. He feels lucky and grateful for his good fortune, singing "Lucky me, can't you see, I'm in love." The final verse brings the song back to its main theme, as he declares that life is wonderful as long as he holds the string. He also acknowledges that letting go of his love would be foolish, singing "I'd be a silly so-and-so if I should ever let her go."

Overall, "World on a String" is a celebratory song about the joys of being in love and feeling like you have everything under control.

Bing was actually accompanied by the Dorsey Brothers Orch.

Thanks for the comment. I won't pretend to be an expert on this. Personnel among the well-known ARC Brunswick session musicians during that period tended to vary a bit from one date to the next. Some Crosby releases around that time are considered 'Dorsey Brothers Orch.' sessions--as was this one per some older sources--and some are not. A couple of the more recent discographical entries ("Rust Jazz" 2007,and Jonzo's "Chronological Bing Crosby" 1997) indicate that Jimmy was not present on that January 26th date and therefore do not show this track as from a 'Dorsey Brothers' session.
