You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You must have been a beautiful baby
You must have been a wonderful child
When you were only starting to go to kindergarten
I bet you drove the little boys wild
And when it came to winning blue ribbons
You must have shown the other kids how
I can see the judges' eyes as they handed you the prize
I bet you made the cutest bow
Oh you must've been a beautiful baby
'Cause baby look at you now

Does your mother realize
The stork delivered quite a prize
The day he left you on the family tree?
Does your dad appreciate
That you're merely super great
The miracle of any century?
If they don't just send them both to me

You must have been a beautiful baby
You must have been a wonderful child
When you were only starting to go to kindergarten
I bet you drove the little boys wild
And when it came to winning blue ribbons
You must have shown the other kids how
I can see the judges' eyes as they handed you the prize
I bet you made the cutest bow
Oh you must've been a beautiful baby
'Cause baby look at you now

Overall Meaning

The song "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" by Bing Crosby is an ode to the beauty and potential of youth. The lyrics describe the imagined childhood of the person he is singing to, and how they must have been a standout even as a toddler. The singer imagines that the person was a wonderful child, driving the little boys wild even as they were starting kindergarten. The song goes on to describe how the person was likely very gifted, winning blue ribbons and charming the judges with their cute bows.

The song is a sweet and nostalgic look back at childhood, framed by the present-day beauty of the person being sung to. It's a reminder that we were all once young and full of potential, and that even as we age and change, that spark of youth and beauty remains inside of us.

Bing, whose love for trad jazz was apparent throughout his long career, always got wonderful, and highly sympathetic, support from his brother's great Dixie outfit. This is my favorite treatment of this cute one; I like the inclusion of the seldom heard verse.

Great recording by Bing. My former landlady had a set of Bing's hit records, and let my wife and I borrow them. This song was one of them. Also, we took my parents and my wife's mom to see Bob Crosby's band and Kay Starr at Disneyland in 1985.

If ANYONE ever doubts Bing's jazz credentials, let them listen to this record. If that ain't jazz singing of the highest order then I don't know what is.

@jourwalis-8875

OK, Bing is a good singer, but I don´t think this is real jazz singing in the true sense of the word. It´s more of a regular pop song from the late 30s.

@jjakiefte2165

@Jourwalis - and what would be an example of true jazz singing according to you?

@paulmurray5655

Here's a bluesy throwback to Bourbon Street....the subject of this song may have been "merely super great", but it sure does describe the one and only Bing Crosby (although in the 30s the great Dick Powell was right there with him). This is proof America had it at one time... Best always. PM

A signature of Bing Crosby imitators for Warner Brothers cartoons.

@nancywarren2446

My husband's Great Uncle Harry Warren wrote the music and he used to get teased by the wife that the TUNE was too much like a burlesque tune. LAUGHTED SO MUCH IT MADE MY SIDES HURT.

@omar10213245

we are all indebted to Great Uncle Harry for a wonderful tune!
