You Took Advantage Of Me
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the spring when the feeling was chronic
And my caution was leaving you flat,
I should have made use of the tonic
Before you gave me that!
A mental deficient you'll grade me.
I've given you plenty of data.
You came, you saw and you slayed me,
And that-a is that-a!

I'm a sentimental sap, that's all.
What's the use of trying not to fall?
I have no will,
You've made your kill
'Cause you took advantage of me!
I'm just like an apple on a bough
And you're gonna shake me down somehow.
So what's the use,
You've cooked my goose
'Cause you took advantage of me!

I'm so hot and bothered that I don't know
My elbow from my ear.
I suffer something awful each time you go
And much worse when you're near.

Here am I with all my bridges burned,
Just a babe in arms where you're concerned,
So lock the doors
And call me yours
'Cause you took advantage of me.

When a girl has the heart of a mother
It must go to someone, of course;
It can't be a sister or brother
And so I loved my horse.
But horses are frequently silly-
Mine ran from the beach of Kailua
And left me alone for a filly,
So I-a picked you-a.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the entire song "You Took Advantage Of Me" by Bing Crosby revolves around how the singer is head-over-heels in love with someone who manipulates their emotions to get what they want from their romantic relationship. The opening lyrics express regret for not protecting oneself from the manipulation that was to come in the relationship, “In the spring when the feeling was chronic, And my caution was leaving you flat, I should have made use of the tonic, Before you gave me that!” The singer then goes on to portray themselves as a naïve and vulnerable person with no willpower to resist the other person's advances, calling themselves a “sap.”

Throughout the song, the singer sings about how susceptible they are to the other person, comparing themselves to an apple on a bough that is easy to shake down. They are so lost in love that they suffer greatly when their lover is away and worse when they are near. The singer even compares their love for their horse to their lover, suggesting that no matter how silly they are, they can't help but love them.

In the end, the singer seems to have submitted entirely to the manipulations of their lover. They have burned all their bridges and are entirely at the mercy of their beloved, who they address with complete subservience, “So lock the doors And call me yours 'Cause you took advantage of me.” The lyrics showcase how an emotionally manipulative relationship can cause someone to lose their self-worth and personal agency while revealing the vulnerability of human emotions.

This genre of music is the happiest ever conceived in the history of mankind. It needs to come back now. After all, it is the 20s again. 😉

@KiyoAraashi

Although I wasn’t someone of this time I can still see records like this! The 20’s had a great musical taste

@micoveliki8729

I think they called them "The Roaring Twenties" 😉

@Fire_Axus

@Fire_Axus

to celebrate covid end

@electrictroy2010

The 2020s are hardly roaring. Which may be a good thing… the 1920s ended with a major crash. Too much fun & out of control spending created a decade-long bust

@Trombonology

One of the greatest Whiteman showcases for the highly individual, instantly recognizable talents of Bix, Tram and Bing! Utterly sublime!

@electrictroy2010

It was written by Rodgers & Hart… they deserve the true credit

@Trombonology

@@electrictroy2010 I'm aware of the authors of the song. Lorenz Hart is my favourite lyricist, while I count composer Richard Rodgers second only to the great George Gershwin. ... It may be borne in mind that there have been some rather poor treatments of even the standards, indicating that terrific raw material doesn't guarantee an artistically successful rendition. Both the authors and interpreters, in their respective roles, deserve credit.

@@electrictroy2010 it says it on the label.
