O Holy Night
Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world, in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine
O night
O night divine

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of the star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from far distant lands
The King of Kings is born the world rejoices;
In all our trials born to be our friend.

Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine

O night
O night divine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "O Holy Night" by Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters are a beautiful description of the nativity scene and the salvation it brings. The song begins with the shining of the stars on the night of the birth of the Savior. It speaks of how the world was lost in sin and error, but with the arrival of the Messiah, the soul felt its worth. The presence of the Lord fills the world with hope, and the weary world rejoices as a new day breaks with the birth of Jesus.

The lyrics then invite people to fall on their knees and hear the angel voices, to recognize the divinity of the moment and to allow themselves to be humbled before the greatness of it all. The night of Jesus' birth is hailed as a time of divine revelation and holiness, an event that is deserving of worship and celebration. As the wise men from far away lands came and stood before the cradle of baby Jesus, the King of Kings is born, bringing friendship and hope to all those who seek Him.

Overall, the lyrics capture the essence of the Christian message of redemption and love, inviting people to bask in the glory of God's love and rejoice in the wonder of His boundless mercy. It is a timeless song that conveys the same message of hope and salvation that it did over a century ago when it was first written.

Possibly the most moving speech about Christ I have ever heard...and I was a Choirboy in a Cathedral...
But these are beautiful, magnificent words about Our Lord
When I hear them at Christmas,I cry,Always
My favourite Christmas Hymn
EVER...
Even better than Wham! Last Christmas....and I adore that....
Let us remember what this Season is all about, and forget about our temptation of accumulation
God bless you all
Merry Christmas everyone 🎆🎄🎇🎄❤️

This segment came from Bing's special, "Merry Christmas, Fred, From the Crosbys". It originally aired on CBS on Wednesday, December 3, 1975, at 9:00PM EST, following CBS' annual airing of "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer". Airing opposite this program, ABC showed an episode of "Baretta"; NBC presented a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation about Valley Forge (America's bi-centennial celebration was only 7 months away, and the networks aired programs in commemoration for months prior).

The "Fred" in question, is, of course, the man sitting behind Bing, Fred Astaire. The program also featured Bing's family(Bing's daughter Mary is sitting next to Astaire) as well as The Young Americans, a show choir started in 1962, which is still around and giving performances.

This was the first Christmas special Bing made for CBS Television, after six holiday shows for NBC, and eight prior to that for ABC. Bing's final Christmas show was in 1977, although the Crosby Family did appear in a program on CBS in 1978, entitled, "Bing Crosby - The Christmas Years", which featured clips from prior specials.

@3:40 They must have done "The First Noel" in one take, because Bing is clearly distracted and hits a couple of klinkers as a result. Not a criticism, merely an observation.

Also, an odd coincidence. The Young Americans appear on Bing's 1975 Christmas show. That same year, David Bowie scores with a hit song and album both entitled, "Young Americans". Bowie would appear on Bing's final Christmas offering in 1977(where they performed, "The Little Drummer Boy" together).

It's so sad we won't be seeing things like this on TV anymore.

ABSOLUTELY, Shaye!! Merry Christmas!!!

If it was aired on television, these programs would have been edited for more commercials. Look at what CBS did to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer as an example.

What's happen to our country? Now all are texting

I'm not so sure that we will never see "such things again on TV." Television responds to market demand--when there is an audience, the programming appears to satisfy the demand. In the meantime, there are alternatives to the mass market, such as Toutube--Seek and ye shall find 😊
