Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Bing Crosby and Jud Conlon's Rhythmaires Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, you know Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen,
(Comet, and Cupid, and Donner and Blitzen)
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Talkin' 'bout Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say
Rudolph, look here Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then how the reindeer loved him
And they shouted out with glee
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history

I'm Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
I got a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows, like a rose
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names

They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say
Say Rudolph, I say, I say Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then how the reindeer loved me
As they shouted out with glee
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history

I'm Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen,

I'm Comet, and Cupid, and Donner, I'm something
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" talk about the titular character, who is different from the other reindeer because of his shiny and bright red nose. Throughout the song, the other reindeer are depicted as a group of bullies who reject Rudolph, do not let him join in any reindeer games, and laugh at him. But then, one Christmas eve, Santa Claus himself seeks Rudolph's help to guide his sleigh through a foggy night. The other reindeer finally accept Rudolph when they see his value for them and celebrate his inclusion with shouts of glee. Rudolph becomes a hero and a symbol of perseverance and courage, proving that being different is not a weakness.

Thank you for uploading this! This is my favorite version of the song, and I was disheartened when I recently discovered that Spotify removed it. It's such a fun one to hear each year!

@BigBingFan

People forget how adept Bing was with the Language; He honed his craft on "The Kraft Music Hall," on radio, and always had a knack with words--big ones, rhythmic ones, any old words, and was a huge intellect in his own right. I am a Big Bing Fan, but objectively, his favorite woman duet partner was Miss Ella--boy, how they blended together! I thank you for posting this; somehow, even though I thought I had everything, I didn't. Thanks for psoting!

@HickW

Best version ever!!! <3

I absolutely love this song!  I work at the Gap and we play a slightly different version and it just makes you dance, dance and dance.  It's a little faster.  But, I love this one too.  One of my favorites!!!

Heard this for the first time a few days ago at Walmart. 😍! That back beat is soooo Hip Hop. Too bad they're not around (RIP) to see what Swing has done. Thanks for posting. Now I need to find that other version 😆
