God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Bing and Frank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God rest you merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray

(Oh tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy, o tidings of comfort and joy)

In Bethlehem in Jewry
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn

The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn

(O tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy o tidings of comfort and joy)

From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name

(O tidings of comfort and joy)
(Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra's version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is a traditional Christmas carol that speaks to the heart of the holiday season. The song opens with the words "God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay" – a message of hope for all those who celebrate Christmas. The song talks about the birth of Jesus Christ, who was born on Christmas day to save us all from Satan's power. It speaks about the blessings of God and the comfort and joy that come with his love.

The second verse of the carol takes us to Bethlehem, where the baby Jesus was born and laid in a manger. The verse highlights the humble beginnings of Jesus, born to Mary, who accepted her role as the Mother of God without any scorn. The third verse of the song tells us how an angel from God came down to the shepherds of Bethlehem and brought them the good news of Jesus' birth. The angel tells the shepherds that the Son of God has been born in Bethlehem, and they should go and see him.

Overall, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is a song that celebrates the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ and the hope, joy, and love that he brings into the world. Repent and trust in Jesus. We all deserve Hell for our sins, such as lying lusting coveting and more. We can't save ourselves, but Jesus can save us. He died on the cross to save us for our sins and rose from the grave defeating death and Hell. You must put your faith in him only. He is the only way to Heaven. Repent and trust in Jesus.

80 odd years later it's still the greatest

@83nuvola

I certainly don't mean to underestimate how good Crosby's voice was but ... I love the orchestral arrangement and the choir. They are just amazing, I would love to find more music like that.

@jamesleopard8518

Well, it sounds like the choral musical director, and the chorus people

@83nuvola

@@jamesleopard8518 I know that very well. I think it was obvious, but maybe it's not. So, what i meant is: i would love to find more music with similar arrangements and similar choir performance.
