Shades of Grey
Biohazard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I make now a stand for belief that I'm steadfast
In hating all of the bullshit you give me doubt my future, present and past
Who are you to infringe your values upon me, I've learned the hard way
Stepping on my toes, you've put my back to the wall, my back to the wall

I've been told a thousand times to give respect when due
Why do you find it so hard to believe I've got none for you
It's my heart and my mind that I'll always follow, I will not break
Nor will my balls, although that I've seen that you've tried
before
Why are people fake?

Maybe you're older, wiser on your own right, it's your mistake
I'm gonna do my own thing regardless, my choice to make
I am real, in touch with my feelings, and I know my place
You have shown, on the other hand, both sides of your face

I see the world in a different light
Things not always black and white
Through all these years still, to this day
My hardened eyes see only shades of grey

I would never try and tell you what was right from wrong
Maybe that's why you feel that I don't belong
Always put me down for things I've said and done
Can't you see it's a war that can't be won

A war that can't be won

Living in your world seems so clear and concise
Shutting out reality makes everything so nice
Paint a pretty picture black and white everyday
See my tattered canvass bleeding shades of grey

I see the world in a different light
Things not always black and white

Through all these years still, to this day
My hardened eyes see only shades of grey

Overall Meaning

The song "Shades of Grey" by Biohazard is about standing up for one's beliefs and not succumbing to the pressure of conforming to others' values. The lyrics convey a sense of defiance towards external influences that attempt to control one's actions and thoughts. The singer asserts that they will not be swayed by societal expectations and will follow their heart and mind. The chorus, "I see the world in a different light/ Things not always black and white/ Through all these years still, to this day/ My hardened eyes see only shades of grey," emphasizes that the world is not simple and straightforward, and there are many nuances to consider.

The song is also critical of people who are hypocritical, and those who demand respect without giving it in return. The lyrics suggest that living in a world where everything is clear-cut and simplistic is not realistic and that acknowledging the shades of grey is essential. The song implies that conformity, living by other people's standards, and ignoring reality only leads to a distorted perception of the world.

Overall, this song is an anthem for individuality, and it urges listeners to be true to themselves, even if it means going against the norms and expectations of society.

Holy moly, the 90's really were a crazy decade for heavy music - I was 14, when suddenly Pantera, Sepultura, Machine Head, Fear Factory or Biohazard brought out masterpieces of albums. Trading audio casettes instead of fucking spotify. Good times, when an album mattered, not only a few singles.

I'm with you on that man, fucking whole album's were bad as hell. I think Biohazard was the best rapmetal band ever...way fucking better than Rage against the machine....Urban Discipline was there best album I believe. I've been to 50 to 75 hardcore shows and the best show I've ever seen was in 1985 at the Orange Show in San Bernardino California, The opening band was the motherfucking CRO MAGS from Brooklyn, NY and they were the baddest fucking band I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot man . On tour with Motorhead, they were on tour with their first album The Age of Quarrel, straight hard core, sooooooo fucking badass, seen Slayer 6 times, Cro Mags were better that night

90s were a great time to have hearing and listen to metal. THE BEST. The 20 years since then is mostly just imitations.

Saw biohazard with sick of it all in Atlanta back in the day. Still to this day one of the most brutal pits I have been in. Great show!
