Turn! Turn! Turn!
Birds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Turn it up and keep on playin'
it like this...
Spendin' time on the floor
Get me higher'n higher
on this deep sounds
The sight of you encountering me
Too beautiful for me to talk to
Can I shake this shyness
It all hangs on the next track
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
I'll just give a sigh
No words will even come out
Killing time alone
Let me find deep inside
what I'm thinkin' of
Never had such a feeling
My heartbeats getting faster
It all hangs on the next track
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Spendin' time on the floor
Get me higher'n higher on this
sweet sweet deep sound
Just gimme more of this sound
gimme more of this sound
gimme more of this sound
lalala

Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...
Turn it up
and don't stop baby...

Turn it up
and don't stop baby...

Overall Meaning

While the lyrics of this song may seem straightforward and repetitive, there is a deeper meaning beneath the surface. The repeated phrases of "turn it up and don't stop baby" and "spending time on the floor" allude to the idea of losing oneself in the music and letting it take over. The singer is entirely consumed by the deep sounds and rhythm of the music and is reaching a higher state of consciousness as a result. The line "let me find deep inside what I'm thinkin' of" represents this idea of introspection and self-discovery that occurs when one immerses oneself in music.

The lyrics also touch on the idea of social anxiety and the difficulty of communicating with someone who appears too beautiful to approach. The singer wants to break free of their shyness and connect with the object of their affection but is unable to find the words to do so. This creates a sense of longing and desire that is heightened by the music they are listening to.

Overall, "Turn! Turn! Turn!" is a song about the transformative power of music and how it can bring people together and help them become more self-aware.

“Turn, Turn, Turn” is such a great song. My dad and I just started reading the book of Ecclesiastes last night. We’ll be reading chapter 2 tonight and chapter 3 tomorrow night.

On the other hand, chapter 4 of Ecclesiastes features text from verse 6 that is apparently associated with another song released seven years later called “Haven’t Got Time for the Pain”, which was written and recorded by none other than Carly Simon about her relationship with a German psychotherapist she had been seeing around that time. However, only specific lyrics from the first verse, chorus, and the second bridge apply:

“All those crazy nights
When I cried myself to sleep
Now melodrama never makes me Weep anymore
‘Cause I haven’t got time for the pain
I haven’t got room for the pain
I haven’t the need for the pain
Not since I’ve known you
You showed me how…

“…How to open up and drink in all
That white light
Pouring down from the Heaven…”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
[1]To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
[2]A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
[3]A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
[4]A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
[5]A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
[6]A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
[7]A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
[8]A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

This was authored by Pete Seeger, an influential folk artist. He recorded a demo of “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” around 1961, and included a live version on his 1962 album “The Bitter and The Sweet” with voice and guitar only. The Byrds brought it out of folk circles with their electrified cover (1965). Released as the follow-up to their #1 hit “Mr. Tambourine Man” (1965), it topped the chart in the US.

The lyrics were taken from a passage […] in the Bible. In an interview, Seeger explained : “I don’t read the Bible that often. I leaf through it occasionally […]. I call it the greatest book of folklore ever given.”

He added : “ I got a letter from my publisher, and he said, ‘Pete, I can’t sell these protest songs you write’ […]. I sat down with a tape recorder and said, ‘I can’t write the kind of songs you want. You gotta go to somebody else. This is the only kind of song I know how to write.’ I pulled out this slip of paper in my pocket and improvised a melody to it in fifteen minutes. And I sent it to him. And I got a letter from him the next week that said, ‘Womderful! Just what I’m looking for.’ Within two months he’d sold it to the Limelighters and then to the Byrds. I liked the Byrd’s record very much, incidentally. All those clanging, steel guitars - they sound like bells.”

When the Byrds started working on the tune, Jim McGuinn and David Crosby devised a new arrangement of Seeger’s original, but it took the band over 50 tries to get the sound right.

Among the pioneers of folk rock, the Byrds’ popularity in the ‘60s rivaled that of The Beatles❕ The group’s characteristic feature was McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker guitar.

This was used in the 1994 masterpiece “Forrest Gump”, as Forrest (Tom Hanks) says goodbye to Jenny (Robin Wright) who is leaving for Berkeley. 💚🌀💜
