And days go by but I don't feel much different than before
Waking up to go back home
Turn the clock and I'll never know
Make the tea to soothe my throat
When does my whole life begin?
Does it care about my sins?
Cause I've been wasting all this time
Hold me close and tell me it's alright
I've been wasting all this time
Hold me close and tell me it's alright
Yea it's alright
Colors fade down to subtle grey
And I can't tell day from night and night from day
Waking up to go back home
Turn the clock and I'll never know
Make the tea to soothe my throat
When does my whole life begin?
What is god and where has it been?
Does it care about my sins?
Cause I've been wasting all this time
Hold me close and tell me it's alright
Yea I've been wasting all this time
Hold me close and tell me it's alright
Yea it's alright
No don't you tell me I was wrong
I never knew what's backing down the road
I'm living on
I said don't you wonder If I was wrong
The lyrics of Birds With Fleas's song Waking Up are a reflection on the passing of time and a search for deeper meaning in life. The singer is anticipating the arrival of summertime, but despite its arrival, they feel unchanged from before. They are caught in a cycle of waking up and going back home, and time seems to blur together making it difficult to distinguish day from night. The singer questions the purpose of their existence, asking when their whole life will begin and pondering the existence and role of God in their life.
The repeated line "I've been wasting all this time, hold me close and tell me it's alright" suggests a feeling of regret or guilt for not making the most of their time, and a desire for comfort and reassurance. The final verse, "No don't you tell me I was wrong, I never knew what's backing down the road, I'm living on. I said don't you wonder if I was wrong" could be interpreted as a plea for understanding and acceptance, despite not having all the answers.
Overall, the song expresses a sense of uncertainty and a yearning for direction and purpose in life.
