Plans
Birds of Tokyo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We made plans to kiss the sun at night
Hopeless dreamers, hopeless types
Shedding skin you show your beauty scars
Don't forget me or who you are

You know this don't feel right
Who knows what we feel?
I just met you I can read your thoughts
What they tell me is what I want
I'll keep you guessing keep you wanting more
'Cause where we're going no one knows

You know this don't feel right
Who knows this could feel right

I just met you, I swear I read your thoughts
So don't forget me or what you want

Light up the stage, make your move, give me something
So I can dance in your light and to your rhythm

Soon it unfolds who we are in this masquerade of stars
Tear off the mask, the face you hide is what I'm missing

We made plans to kiss the sun at night
Hopeless dreamers, hopeless types
One was turning, one was standing still
I won't forget what was promised here

You know this don't feel right
Who knows what we feel?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Plans" by Birds of Tokyo are a portrayal of an ephemeral and fleeting romantic encounter between two people. The reference to "kissing the sun at night" is a metaphor for a seemingly impossible act, akin to a romantic escapade that is never meant to last. The phrase "hopeless dreamers, hopeless types" highlights the idea that both of them are stricken with an excessive inclination towards romanticism and fantasizing about love, but with a lack of realism or maturity. The same idea is conveyed through the line "where we're going no one knows," implying the uncertainty and unpredictability of their shared journey.

The song also features a sense of restlessness and hesitance. One of them is not quite sure whether their shared feelings "feel right" or not. However, there is still a sense of desire and passion between them, highlighted through the lyrics that state "I swear I read your thoughts, so don't forget me or what you want." Ultimately, the song ends on a note of a promise and commitment, with the line "I won't forget what was promised here," indicating the importance of their encounter for both of them.

This song never gets old.

Still the song of the decade for me. Almost ten years later, this still encapsulates all the emotions and desires of this time well. Birds of Tokyo are also one of the best true rock bands of the decade. The Aussie music scene killed it during the 2010's!

Good song, but you definitely need to expand your horizons.

โ€‹@Greg Cunningham who are you to tell someone how to feel or relate to music? Do you and let others do for themselves without judgement.

@GregoryCunningham

@Shars Nothing wrong with expanding your knowledge. You might try it.

I heard this song for the first time whilst driving home after a terrible day at work, and I was lost for breath.. All I could think of was how beautiful the song was, how unimportant my crappy day was, and how this song will be touching the broken hearts of people with bigger worries than my own.. Brilliant!
