Not About Angel
Birdy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So is it wrong to toss this line?
If your heart was full of love
Could you give it up?
'Cause what about, what about angels?
They will come, they will go, make us special
Don't give
Me up
How unfair, it's just our love
Found something real that's out of touch
But if you'd searched the whole wide world
Would you dare to let it go?
'Cause what about, what about angels?
They will come, they will go, make us special
Don't give me up
Don't give
Me up
'Cause what about, what about angels?
They will come, they will go, make us special
It's not, about not about angels, angels
The lyrics to Birdy's song Not About Angels reflect on the bittersweet nature of love and relationships. The opening lines, "We know full well there's just time, So is it wrong to toss this line?" speaks to the fleeting nature of time and how people often struggle with whether to take a chance on love. The following lines, "If your heart was full of love, Could you give it up?" question whether it's better to hold onto love or to let it go.
The chorus repeats the phrase "what about angels?" which can be interpreted in different ways. Perhaps the angels represent the people who come into our lives and leave, making us feel special but also leaving us with a sense of loss. Or, it could refer to the idea that love itself is something otherworldly or divine. The lines "Don't give me up, Don't give Me up" plead for the preservation of love and the refusal to let it slip away.
The bridge shifts the focus to the paradoxical nature of love, with the lyrics, "How unfair, it's just our love, Found something real that's out of touch, But if you'd searched the whole wide world, Would you dare to let it go?" Here, the singer acknowledges that love can be irrational and elusive, yet still wonders if it's worth holding onto despite its difficulties.
Overall, the song's lyrics encapsulate the emotions felt in a relationship that is both precious and precarious.
