Work Is Done
Birth Control Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The work is done, the work is done
The work is done I have just killed a child
You know down in Vietnam
It needs no father, it needs no mother
It needs no parents anymore, cause you know,
Cause you know the work is done

So gimme shelter, so gimme shelter
So gimme shelter Uncle Sam, I'm a lonely boy
I have just killed someone
So gimme shelter Uncle Sam, I'm a lonely boy
I have just killed someone

I love the peace, I love the peace
I love the peace and if I killed the enemy they said
I have done nothing wrong
Do me a favour, do me a favour
Do me a favour just believe that I feel what I say
Life is hard enough

So gimme shelter, so gimme shelter
So gimme shelter Uncle Sam, I'm a lonely boy
I have just killed someone
So gimme shelter Uncle Sam, I'm a lonely boy
I have just killed someone

So gimme shelter, so gimme shelter
So Uncle Sam look what I have done

I'm on my way
I'm going home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "The Work Is Done" by Birth Control tackles the issue of war and violence. In the opening line, the singer declares that the work is done, implying that he has just completed a mission or task. However, the next line reveals the gravity of his work as he states that he has just killed a child. The following lines suggest that this child is from Vietnam, and the singer believes that it no longer needs parents since it has been killed.

The chorus begs for shelter from Uncle Sam, suggesting that the singer is seeking refuge and redemption from his actions. He repeatedly mentions that he is a lonely boy, possibly indicating that he is young and vulnerable. The singer justifies his actions by claiming that he loves peace and that killing the enemy is not wrong. He asks for a favor to believe that he genuinely feels what he says, indicating that he is seeking understanding and empathy.

The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is going home, but there is a sense of ambiguity as to whether he is physically or metaphorically going home. The song ends with the plea for Uncle Sam to look at what he has done, perhaps indicating a desire for accountability and responsibility.

@underdoggo929 That is a correct not up for debate spot on assessment. Know what else I would add on to that and that is although that time period was dotted with a whole lot of great musicians with their music and performances. I strongly believe if I one was curious enough to want to know when and which year was the most prominent in terms of say which year from that era had the best most albums, I have through just a cursory observance feel it was a close neck and neck between 1972 and 1973 with 1973 coming out ahead. Again this is just cursory I have yet found the time to commit to a proper study and delve deep listing all the albums released for each year within that era which I guess the most democratic WAY would be to have a certain amount of people vote on their top 10 top 20 list of Best albums for each year I'm sure I would have to think other criteria such as accolades album sales etc just to really have a thorough and precise voting process. Anyway in my opinion the year that sticks out the most is 1973 and that's just from a cursory observance and no detailed system.
What do you think ? Which do you think would be the BEST YEAR for Rock Album being released ?

There's so much good music from years gone by you can completely ignore everything new or for the last 30 years give or take a few great bands.
