Singin' the Blues
Bix Beiderbecke feat. Frankie Trumbauer and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I never felt more like singin' the blues
'Cause I never thought that I'd ever lose
Your love dear, why'd you do me this way
Well, I never felt more like cryin' all night
'Cause everythin's wrong, and nothin' ain't right
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

The moon and stars no longer shine
The dream is gone I thought was mine
There's nothin' left for me to do
But cry over you (cry over you)
Well, I never felt more like runnin' away
But why should I go 'cause I couldn't stay
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Well, I never felt more like singin' the blues
'Cause I never thought that I'd ever lose
Your love dear, why'd you do me this way
Well, I never felt more like cryin' all night
'Cause everythin's wrong, and nothin' ain't right
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Oh, the moon and stars no longer shine
The dream is gone I thought was mine
There's nothin' left for me to do
But cry over you (cry over you)
Well, I never felt more like runnin' away

But why should I go 'cause I couldn't stay
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Overall Meaning

The song "Singin’ the Blues" is a lament for lost love. The opening verses express the singer's shock and disappointment at having been abandoned by the person they loved. The singer never thought they would lose the love of their life, and now they are left alone and heartbroken. They feel like they have no choice but to sing the blues, the archetype for music of sadness and despair. The second verse talks about the singer's lost dreams of a shared future and the loneliness that they now feel. The moon and stars, which were once symbols of romance, no longer shine for the singer. They have nothing left to do but cry over the one who left them.

The chorus restates the same emotional refrain as the opening, emphasizing the pain that the singer is feeling. They feel so sad that they could run away, but there is no place to go without the love of their life. Without that person, the singer is left singing the blues. The song's lyrics thus emphasize the power of romantic love to inspire and nurture, as well as the pain and sadness that can follow its loss.

@DerVulture

i still can’t get over this. I’m feeling like 8 different emotions at once when Bix plays, he is my favourite musician. I’ve never had somebody speak to me so well and make me feel such a wide range of emotions; his playing is impeccable. Bix will never die. tears :’)

I am reading a bio of Artie Shaw and this recording is stated to have been one that all the musicians felt to be pure gold. How fortunate I am that I can hear it just by going to YouTube. Thank you for posting it.

@osocool1too

What an amazing small studio recording...you can hear everything so clearly.

@SheridanJazz

Yeah, the engineers were really sharp. This was the start of electrical recording. The engineers of today are extreme lightweights....rock 'n' roll guys. I had a friend who used to say that the sound quality is directly proportionate to the length of the sound engineer's pony tail.

@BassetHoundTrio

Emrah, your posts always sound great but this one is really great!! It sounds like it was recorded yesterday!

Sounds so fresh and crisp. Scarcely believe this was recorded over 90 years ago. Absolutely timeless.

@Nealsiegal

I don't want to be hyperbolic but- I think I just hear the voice of the demi-gods!

@bgraham928

The Frankie Trumbauer Orchestra of 1926 is the greatest jazz/popular group of all-time!
