Hope
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here's my version of it, eternal whirlwind
Here's my version of it, eternal whirlwind
Here's my version of it, eternal whirlwind

What's the lesser of two evils?
If a suicide bomber
Made to look pregnant
Manages to kill her target, or not

What's the lesser of two evils?

What's the lesser of two evils
If she kills them
Or dies in vain?

Nature has fixed no limits on our hopes

Oh, what's the lesser of, of two evils?

What's the lesser of two evils
If the bomb was fake
Or if it was real?

Here's my version of it, eternal whirlwind
I have fostered since childhood

Well, I don't care
Love is all

I dare to drown
To be proven wrong

Overall Meaning

Björk's song "Hope" starts off with the repetition of the line "Here's my version of it, eternal whirlwind" which symbolizes the ongoing cycle of violence and destruction that continues to plague humanity. The song then poses the question about the "lesser of two evils," specifically in the scenario of a suicide bomber who is made to look pregnant. Björk challenges the listener to consider what is worse, if the bomber successfully kills their target or not. She extends the question to ask what is worse, the bomber dying in vain or achieving their goal. Throughout the song, Björk is attempting to grapple with the complexity of violence and our responses to it.

The chorus of the song introduces the idea that nature has fixed no limits on our hopes. This line is a reminder that the ability to hope for peace and resolution is a uniquely human trait. The song then returns to the idea of the "lesser of two evils" by questioning whether it is worse for the bomb to be fake or real. The song concludes with Björk asserting her version of hope as an "eternal whirlwind" that she has fostered since childhood. The final lines of the song, "Well, I don't care/Love is all/I dare to drown/To be proven wrong," exemplify Bjork's willingness to explore difficult topics and to push boundaries in order to fully understand them.

I love Bjork and Timbaland together! Do you have an instrumental for this?

Djo Zouave&Nul

Timbaland? What about Toumani Diabate. Don’t miss the essence

For me the song is about making a crucial choice: 1. Stand up for your beliefs and in the process cause anguish and suffering to others; or 2. Choose to let people live although this will cause you to be branded as a traitor or outcast in your own belief system or group.

What is the lesser of two evils?

Björk explains that love is the most important belief, stating it in the song.... Will killing people foster love ? That's for us humans to decide....
