Hyper Ballad
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We live on a mountain
Right at the top
There's a beautiful view
From the top of the mountain

Every morning I walk towards the edge
And throw little things off
Like car-parts, bottles and cutlery
Or whatever I find lying around

It's become a habit
A way to start the day
I go through all this
Before you wake up

So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
I go through all this
Before you wake up

So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
It's real early morning
No-one is awake

I'm back at my cliff
Still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
On their way down

I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
Imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks
When it lands

Will my eyes
Be closed or open?
I go through all this
Before you wake up

So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
I go through all this
Before you wake up

So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
I go through all this
Before you wake up

So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
Safe up here with you
Safe up here with you

Safe up here with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Björk's "Hyperballad" paint a vivid picture of a person living on the top of a mountain. The first stanza talks about the beauty of the view from the top of the mountain and the habits of the person who lives there. The person throws little things off the mountain as a way to start their day.

The second stanza reveals the reason behind this peculiar habit: the person does it before their partner wakes up so that they can feel happier and safer up on the mountain with their partner. The third stanza takes the listener back to the early morning, where the person is still throwing things off the cliff and listening intently to the sounds they make on their way down. The final lines of the song describe the person's thoughts as they ponder what it would feel like to fall off the mountain and what their fate would be.

Line by Line Meaning

We live on a mountain
We reside on top of a mountain

Right at the top
More specifically, at the very summit

There's a beautiful view
The panoramic sight from up here is breathtaking

From the top of the mountain
From our elevated position

Every morning I walk towards the edge
At the crack of dawn, I stroll to the precipice

And throw little things off
I toss miscellaneous objects down the slope

Like car-parts, bottles and cutlery
Examples of such items include automotive components, glass containers, and silverware

Or whatever I find lying around
Anything I stumble upon that's on the ground

It's become a habit
This routine has turned into something I do subconsciously

A way to start the day
This act has become sort of a ritual to begin my morning

I go through all this
I repeat this process every day

Before you wake up
Before you rise from slumber

So I can feel happier
By doing so, I experience more joy

To be safe up here with you
As it provides a sense of security while I am with you

It's real early morning
The time is quite early

No-one is awake
No human person is currently conscious

I'm back at my cliff
I have returned to my previous location by the precipice

Still throwing things off
Continuing to toss items downhill

I listen to the sounds they make
I listen to the noises these items produce

On their way down
As they tumble towards the bottom

I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
I track their trajectory with my vision until they hit the rocks

Imagine what my body would sound like
I envision what noise my body would make if it followed the same path

Slamming against those rocks
Colliding with the hard surface below

When it lands
After it reaches the ground

Will my eyes
I wonder whether my eyes

Be closed or open?
Would they be shut or wide-open?

Safe up (here with you)
Safe and secure being with you by my side up here

I stand by the fact that this is one of the best songs of all time

@sosijiz1971

Agreed! And the way she sings/says SAFE? Glory. That one word hits me, every single time; sends shivers quite beautifully down the spine (and everywhere else!). The Jools Holland live version is sublime too, I reckon?

@TheRealRoyalPine

In my opinion, only a few songs compete with Hyper-ballad the place of best song ever writen

@stuartschwartz234

keep standing.

@yan3562

And you damn right

@energypalace

I agree! The best song ever

Björk explains: "I guess that song is about when you're in a relationship and it's going really well and you're really happy and maybe you have given up parts of yourself. To fall in love and be in a relationship for a long time is like giving a lot of parts of you away because the relationship becomes more important than you as individuals. It's a bit of a tricky balance. I think everyone in a relationship needs to know not to forget themselves..." (from an interview by David Hemingway)

I thought this was about her baby boy. No?

Would actually appear that even Bjork herself doesn't know what this song is actually about. Notice the first two words in the quote above....."I guess...." So, I GUESS that would mean she didn't know what it was about when she wrote it. :)
