Pagan Poetry -
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pedaling through
The dark currents
I find
An accurate copy
A blueprint
Of the pleasure
In me
Swirling black lilies totally ripe
A secret code carved
Swirling black lilies totally ripe
A secret code carved

He offers
A handshake
Crooked
Five fingers
They form a pattern
Yet to be matched

On the surface simplicity
But the darkest pit in me
It's pagan poetry
Pagan poetry

Morsecoding signals (signals)
They pulsate (wake me up) and wake me up
(pulsate) from my hibernating

On the surface simplicity
Swirling black lilies totally ripe
But the darkest pit in me
It's pagan poetry
Swirling black lilies totally ripe
Pagan poetry

Swirling black lilies totally ripe

I love him, I love him
I love him, I love him
I love him, I love him
I love him, I love him
She loves him, she loves him

This time
She loves him, she loves him
I'm gonna keep it to myself
She loves him, she loves him
She loves him, she loves him
This time
I'm gonna keep me all to myself
She loves him, she loves him
And he makes me want to hurt myself again
She loves him, she loves him

She loves him, she loves him
And he makes me want to hurt myself again

Overall Meaning

In "Pagan Poetry," Bjork sings about the intense and complicated emotions of love. The first verse describes the singer's personal pleasure and how they see it as a blueprint. The second verse introduces an unnamed male character who offers a crooked handshake with his five fingers, which form a pattern yet to be matched. The surface simplicity of the interaction contrasts with the darkness within the singer, as exemplified by the use of the term "pagan poetry." In the bridge, the lyrics refer to "morse coding signals" pulsating and waking the singer up. The final chorus echoes the earlier imagery of "swirling black lilies totally ripe" and the love triangle, with the singer deciding to keep their feelings to themselves but also acknowledging how this love makes them want to hurt themselves again.

Overall, "Pagan Poetry" is about the complexity and darkness of love and how it can elicit extreme emotions from the singer.

Honestly this doesn't feel like it was released almost 20 years ago. Still ahead today.

Björk is one of popular music’s true geniuses. Moments like the strings-filled ending of “5 Years” and the beginning of the last section of “Harm of Will” (after the angelic voices) are, when listening to the albums in chronological order, pinnacles of western music — some of history’s most moving testaments to the power of love, and more generally to the persistence of the emotional realm of the self. And she, very much like the Beatles, seems to touch on this and related aspects of human life, like the impossibility of ever building a world governed simply by reason, with optimism (note the “All is Full of Love” music video) rather than with deep concern — which is justified because, after all, a society in which all people are loved appropriately means one in which there aren’t enough furious people for the society to be at real risk of descent into chaos. Sometimes people more competitive in nature find a number of great minds of the humanities naively idealistic. They often find art that criticizes the status quo to lack significance because the world can never be fair. But what should be stressed is that the luminaries of these fields are not the ones to blame for their failures to immediately change the human race with their prescient approaches — their styles, their ways of seeing the world. Their works remain an important contribution to culture, even if the humans exposed to such works often lack the insight to change in accordance with the ideals that high art expresses. While Picasso’s Guernica or the albums of the Beatles may have failed to prevent atrocities like the Holocaust or the Rwandan genocide, this does not make the works themselves unimportant; rather, this means they are on a higher plane. And we may dismiss it as wishful thinking, as something that cannot ever be the way of actual reality — but it is not their fault if one does so. Björk’s albums offer us an idealism. And we should try, amidst the impending climate catastrophe, to listen...and then be changed for the better...and then interpret reality with a framework including love of all living beings...and then act, in the hope that our reality at least gets closer and closer to what is in the minds of those like her...
