Vísur Vatnsenda-Rósu
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Augun mín og Augun þín
Ã" þá fögru steina
Mitt var þitt og þitt var mitt
þú veist hvað ég meina
Langt er síðan sá ég hann
Sannlega fríður var hann
Allt sem prýða má einn mann
mest af lýðum bar hann
þig ég trega manna mest
Mædda af tára flóði

Ã" að við hefðum aldrei sést
elsku vinurinn góði

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Björk's song Vísur Vatnsenda-Rósu are a tribute to a lost love. In the first two lines, the singer compares her eyes to the eyes of the addressee and says that their love was like two beautiful stones. The following two lines express the idea that what was hers was his and what was his was hers, as in a true love relationship. Then she tells the story of seeing him for the last time, describing him as truly magnificent and charismatic (allt sem prýða má einn mann, mest af lýðum bar hann) and how she misses him deeply (þig ég trega manna mest/mædda af tárflóði). The last two lines express the longing to see him again, using the endearing phrase "dear friend" (elsku vinurinn góði).

My eyes and your eyes
Oh those beautiful stones
Mine was yours and yours was mine
You knwo what I mean
Long is since I saw him
Truly fair he was
All that may adorn a man
Most of the people carried him
You I long for most of all
Heavy with the flood of tears
Oh that I never had seen you
Dear beloved friend

I’m actually really glad that Zack Snyder’s Justice League has brought so many people to this song. The rendition of it in the movie was beautiful and it really drove home Arthur’s place in the fishing village(s) as a local demigod or folk legend. The local women singing this felt very ritualistic and reverent in a good way.
