Hunter
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh
If travel is searching
And home has been found

I'm not stopping
I'm going hunting
I'm the hunter
I'll bring back the goods
But I don't know when

I thought I could organize freedom
How Scandinavian of me

En-cha-le-li
En-cha-le
You sussed it out, didn't you ?
Yeah!

You could smell it
So you left me on my own
To complete the mission
Now I'm leaving it all behind

I'm going hunting
I'm the hunter, I'm the hunter
I'm going hunting
I'm the hunter, I'm the hunter
I'm the hunter, I'm the hunter

I'm the hunter
Ooh

Overall Meaning

In this song, Björk explores the human desire for adventure and seeking, questioning the very idea of what it means to be at "home". She starts by acknowledging that "travel is searching" and that she has finally found a place to call home. However, despite this, she feels compelled to still go out and hunt, to explore the world and all its possibilities. It's as if she has an insatiable thirst for adventure that cannot be quenched by simply settling down.

Björk then reflects on her past attempt to "organize freedom", which she notes is a very Scandinavian thing to do. She's essentially saying that she believed she could have the best of both worlds - the freedom to explore and roam, while still having a stable home to come back to. But she now realizes that this idea is flawed and that true freedom comes from embracing the moment and living in the present.

She ends the song by proclaiming that she's leaving it all behind, the past and the future, and going out to hunt. The repetition of the phrase "I'm the hunter" reinforces her fierce determination to seek and explore, to not be put in a box or confined to a certain way of living. The use of the African chant "En-cha-le-li" adds to the sense of adventure and exoticism, further reinforcing the theme of exploration and searching.

@Stefarooh

I was 16 when I first heard Björk back in 1993. My mother belonged to a club
called Leisure Books that sent you a catalogue every month from which you could
choose 3 books for a set price. You could also select CD's. One month my mother
couldn't make up her mind so I asked if I could choose a CD. I was into grunge
back then (Nirvana, Stone Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins) and
the cover of the CD made her look like a grunge rock chick so I chose Debut not
knowing what to expect when it arrived. My first listen I was a bit taken aback
with her voice and vocal style but the album quickly grew on me that it became
a favourite for that year. It also got me into dancepop, electropop and trip
hop that would eventually lead to a deep love for house music. I had officially
become a fan. I have been a fan of hers for 27 years now as I turn 43 this
year. I still deeply love this woman's music.

first of all she STILL looked stunning even bald . . . secondly this visual direction for a music video that came out in the 90's blows my mind. this video is just about as old as me!

I was thinking exactly the same. She still looks like a 20 odd years old, and sounds the same despite her being only 4 years younger than me!!!
