Headphones
Bjork Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Genius to fall asleep
To your tape last night
(So warm)
Sounds go through the muscles
These abstract wordless movements
They start off cells that
Haven't been touched before
These cells are virgins
(Waking up slowly)

My headphones
They saved my life
Your tape
It lulled me to sleep
To sleep, to sleep

Nothing will be the same
(I'm fast asleep)
I like this resonance
It elevates me
I don't recognize myself
This is very interesting

My headphones
They saved my life
Your tape
It lulled me to sleep
To sleep, to sleep

I'm fast asleep now
(I'm fast asleep)

My headphones
They saved, saved my life
Your tape

It lulled me to sleep
To sleep, to sleep

Overall Meaning

Björk's song "Headphones" reveals her love for the transformative power of music. The lyrics describe how music can transport someone to another world, both mentally and physically. The first verse demonstrates how music can affect the body, describing how the vibrations of sounds travel through muscles and stimulate cells that have never been activated before. These abstract, wordless movements awaken and transform the listener.

Björk's headphones become a sanctuary for her in the second verse. She proclaims that they saved her life, indicating the sacred space that music creates. She uses "tape" as a nostalgic reference to how music was once physically recorded on cassette tapes, showing her connection to a time when music was more tangible. She then goes into a trance-like state, where she no longer recognizes herself - music has the power to transform her into someone new.

The repetition of the phrase "To sleep, to sleep" in the chorus further emphasizes the transformative power of music. Sleep is a state where one is most vulnerable and dreams can take over, and the listener is transported on a journey. The last line, "I'm fast asleep now," solidifies the fact that music has transformed Björk, and she is at peace in a new world.

Bjork - Post

With such an eclectic range , this album seemed to try and go everywhere.
The monster hit “It’s OH So Quiet” though a superb song, got played far too much that I couldn’t bear to hear it again at one point.

One track which really caught my introverted attention though was this one.
This summed me up.

Even now I can lose myself in my headphones, and she describes that feeling in such a childlike beautiful way.

In high school I listened to this every night with my headphones on in my bed.
To block out my parents fighting/ going through divorce.
20 years later I realized.

I remember being a kid listening to Post with headphones on.. I remember quite a few times falling asleep to the album but getting into an in-between awake and asleep state while this song was on. It's a very interesting place to be.
