New World
Bjork Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Train-whistles, a sweet clementine
Blueberries, dancers in line
Cobwebs, a bakery sign

Ooooh - a sweet clementine
Ooooh - dancers in line
Ooooh ...
If living is seeing
I'm holding my breath
In wonder - I wonder
What happens next?
A new world, a new day to see

I'm softly walking on air
Halfway to heaven from here
Sunlight unfolds in my hair

Ooooh - I'm walking on air
Ooooh - to heaven from here
Ooooh ...

If living is seeing
I'm holding my breath
In wonder - I wonder

What happens next?
A new world, a new day to see

Overall Meaning

Björk’s New World is a song about experiencing the beauty of life with a sense of awe and wonder. The first stanza sets the scene with train-whistles, sweet clementines, blueberries, dancers in line, cobwebs and a bakery sign. These are all sensory moments of the moment, not necessarily transcendent ones. Yet, the singer recognizes the value in simply paying attention to these everyday occurrences, as they can often bring about a sense of joy and enchantment.

The second stanza continues the theme of wonder, as the singer reflects on the nature of living as a constant state of intrigue and surprise. She holds her breath in a state of expectancy, wondering what will happen next. In this state, she is open to the possibility of a new world, a new day to see. The final stanza focuses on the singer as she floats on air, feeling as though she is halfway to heaven. The sunlight is playing with her hair, and she is once again overcome with a sense of wonder.

New World is a song about mindfulness, about paying attention to the present moment and finding magic in the mundane. The song speaks to the power of living with a sense of curiosity, and of how an open heart and mind can lead to new experiences and worlds.

I love how it sounds like a requiem, but also like a victory song.

Absolutely. I don’t know how to react

My daughter died the same year this movie came out. I sing it to her every year on her anniversary. She was a year old and I hope her departure was as beautiful as this song. I hope I'll see her again.
