Rather than singing in English, as is common practice among Dutch bands, BLØF produces songs in their native Dutch, vastly contributing to the popularization of Nederpop, as the genre has been known in the Netherlands..
Besides having deeply sensitive lyrics, BLØF incorporates sounds from around the world. Their hit song Aanzoek zonder ringen (Proposal without rings) uses Japanese kodo drums in the background, while their album, Umoja, was the result of a journey around the world to capture multi-national sounds.
Critics claim that their formula for success is the way they crafted songs; they try to find the ideal balance between alternative and popular rock, poetic lyrics, and the voice of Paskal Jakobsen. This has brought BLØF the hits, awards, airplay, and (inter-)national recognition that has propelled these four musicians into the most successful Dutch-language group in recent years.
Besides success, BLØF has also had its fair share of tragedy. Drummer Chris Götte, who replaced Henk Tjoonk in 1997, died in a motor crash on March 17th, 2001. When the news got out, the Bløf website was filled with condolences from fans and friends. In June, the band released a memorial album called Oog In Oog (Eye to eye). The revenue for the album was donated to War Child. Norman Bonink (who came from Frank Boeijen Groep) joined the band that same year and continues to be their drummer today.
Alles moet weg

M'n huis barst uit elkaar
Zo verzamelwoedend
En nergens ooit mee klaar
Ik kan er niets mee doen
Al die ouwe troep
Gooi het overboord
Bewaar niets meer van toen
Niets meer aan te doen
refr.:
Alles moet weg, alles moet weg
Alles moet weg, alles moet weg
Ik kan er niet meer tegen
Want m'n hoofd barst uit elkaar
De rotzooi van m'n zolder
Weegt op m'n hart te zwaar
Ik kan er niets mee doen
Al die ouwe troep
Gooi het overboord
Zet het aan de stoep
Bewaar niets meer van toen
Nee, niets meer aan te doen
refr.(2x)
Dozen vol van vroeger
Dozen vol van pijn
Dozen vol van wroeging
Maar dat hoeft niet zo te zijn
refr.(2x)
Alles moet weg
Bløf's song "Alles Moet Weg" describes the singer's desperate desire to let go of the past and move on from their material possessions that hold them back. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a cluttered house that is bursting at the seams and overwhelming the singer. They feel trapped by their own tendency to hoard and collect things, and this accumulation has reached a point where it has become a burden on their mental and emotional well-being. The lyrics suggest that the only solution to this problem is to let go of everything and start over, to begin anew with a clean slate.
The repetition of the phrase "alles moet weg" (everything must go) reinforces this message and serves as a mantra for the singer to follow. The final verse introduces the idea that the clutter is not just physical but emotional as well. The "dozen vol van vroeger, dozen vol van pijn, dozen vol van wroeging" (boxes full of the past, pain, and remorse) reveal that the singer is not just weighed down by their possessions but also by their memories and regrets. However, the song offers a glimmer of hope and suggests that releasing these possessions and emotions is a necessary step toward healing and moving forward in life.
