His fist gig was New Year’s Day, 1982 and his debut single 'Human Features' was released the same year. An erratic few years followed and he signed for WEA records in 1984, but the relationship was not fruitful and Vearncombe was dropped during the promotion period for the single ‘More Than The Sun.’
Black had two top-ten hits in the UK in 1987: 'Sweetest Smile' and 'Wonderful Life'. The album of this name reached no. 3 in the UK album chart, but following albums and singles did not enjoy similar commercial success. He was able to continue recording music, releasing 14 albums over the course of his life. His latest, ‘Blind Faith’, was released in 2015.

Once more I won't ask again,
Don't tell me I should count to ten.
Think freely.
I won't attempt to curb your speech,
It sounds like something out of reach.
Oh, it's crazy,
When I think of how I feel so free,
Could be!
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
And that's fine by me,
And that's fine by me.
Bingo!
You've said it, you don't care to play,
Just drag on through another day.
Oh, maybe
It's time you learn to play the fool,
Break some of your silly rules.
Oh, and someday,
When you think you can't do anymore,
I'll be lying here to break your fall,
So small.
(Finder),
Oh I never seem to know when I will find her.
I am the (finder),
And that's fine by me,
That's fine by me.

The lyrics of the song "Finder" by Black seem to tell the story of a person who is searching for someone special, someone they call "her". The singer is portrayed as a free spirit who won't let anyone curb their speech and is questioning whether this may be the reason why they haven't found the person they are looking for yet. But despite the uncertainty of when they will find "her", the singer is content with being the "finder". In the second verse, the singer talks to someone who seems jaded or disillusioned with life, encouraging them to break free from their rules and play the fool, perhaps suggesting that this may be the key to finding what they're looking for. The song ends with a guitar solo and the repetition of the chorus.
Overall, the song seems to be about the search for love or perhaps a deeper connection with someone, and the idea that the journey of searching is just as important as the end result. The singer is content with being the finder, suggesting that they are enjoying the search rather than just fixating on finding "her". It's a message to stay true to oneself, not to compromise who you are in the search for love, and to embrace the unknown and possible uncertainty along the way.
