Hardly Star-Crossed Lovers
Black Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I used to cry a lot,
But now I don't
It's you, you.
When you smile
The whole world's sky,
When you smile
I'm a star in that sky
And we're barely friends,
We're hardly star-crossed lovers,
But who cares?
It's you, it's you.
When you smile
The whole world's sky,
When you smile
I'm a star in that sky.
It's you, it's you.
It's you.
The lyrics of Black's song "Hardly Star-Crossed Lovers" depict a person who has overcome their past struggles with hiding and crying by finding someone who brings them such immense joy that their whole perspective on life and themselves change. The person is deeply enamored with this individual and finds that their smile is enough to make them feel significant and like they are shining bright in the world.
The person acknowledges that their relationship is not typically the dramatic, fated love story that is often portrayed in media, but that doesn't matter because their feelings for this person are so strong and genuine. It is almost as if the existence of this person and their smile give the individual a new lease on life and purpose.
This song is a beautiful tribute to how someone can change our lives for the better in a quiet, unassuming way. Sometimes, the most transformative relationships are the ones that are understated and unadorned with grand gestures. They can bring about a sense of renewal, happiness, and optimism that can change a person's worldview completely.

I used to hide,
In the past, I used to conceal my true feelings and emotions,
I used to cry a lot,
In the past, I used to frequently shed tears due to emotional distress and pain,
But now I don't
However, now I no longer hide my feelings or experience as much emotional pain,
It's you, you.
The reason for this positive change is because of you, because of your presence in my life,
When you smile
Whenever you show joy and happiness through your smile,
The whole world's sky,
It feels as though the entire universe is bright and expansive,
When you smile
Whenever you show joy and happiness through your smile,
I'm a star in that sky
I feel special and important, like a star that shines brightly within that universe,
And we're barely friends,
Even though we are not very close and do not have a romantic relationship,
We're hardly star-crossed lovers,
Our relationship is not one of two individuals fated to be together against all odds,
But who cares?
But regardless of this fact, it doesn't diminish the happiness and contentment that I feel,
It's you, it's you.
It's all because of you, it's because of your impact on my life,
It's you.
In short, you are the reason behind my newfound happiness and emotional stability.
