1) - Durban-born (South Africa) Nkosinathi Maphumulo has been on the music scene for over a decade but only got his break a few years ago. Nkosinathi, otherwise known as Black Coffee, is popular for his smash hit remixes, most of which have dominated the airwaves in the past couple of years.
This maestro DJ and producer forged his musical background with his school choir and by studying the keyboard. He studied music in Durban because he felt that as a producer, he had to deepen his overall musical knowledge, develop his listening skills and advance his knowledge of music theory.
2003 saw Black Coffee starting to put his first project together. He revealed that his first album was created using very basic music-making software. “I don't know how to explain the production stages of my album because all I did was put down the basic ideas that I had. I didn't use any MIDI controllers or anything along those sophisticated lines. All I did was program the beats.”
After the successful 12” release of Black Coffee’s underground hit ‘Kwanele’, Kronologik brings you the self-titled debut album from South Africa’s prolific awarding winning DJ/producer.
Nathi ‘Black Coffee’ Maphumulo began his DJ career back in 1994 while still in High School. While studying Music in Natal Technikon, he formed ‘Shana’ – a band that has gone on to record and release four albums. In 2001 he was offered an opportunity to freelance for various clubs and promoters until securing a residency at Voodoo Lounge nightclub - the most happening club of it’s time. In 2003 he was chosen as one of two South African participants in the Red Bull Music Academy which jumpstarted him into the South African DJ scene. So much so that he was given the prime weekend dance slot on Umhlobo Wenene (Saturday’s 8-10) – a show featuring the most international DJ’s on South African radio. In 2006 Black Coffee triumphed in the category of Best Dance Album at the prestigious South African Music Awards and in 2007 he was picked to play at the Red Bull Music Academy lounge at the Sonar festival in Barcelona. Black Coffee has played alongside the cream of local and international DJ’s including Little Louie Vega, Alix Alvarez, Franck Roger, Charles Webster, DJ Spinna and Osunlade.
Now ‘Black Coffee’ - the SAMA award winning album gets an international release through Kronologik Music. Twelve tracks of deep, soulful, afro house music featuring artists such as Mabe Thobejane, Busi Mhlongo, Shana and Mafikizolo.
The album also includes Black Coffee’s remixes of classic tracks like Hugh Masekela's 1972 masterpiece, 'Stimela', Thandiswa's 'Kwanele' and ‘S Khuzile’ by Brothers Of Peace - all in his inimitable Kwaito style. If you are wondering what Kwaito is - its South Africa’s home-grown music that is based on US house music infused with South African melodies and rhythms.
Other well known Black Coffee tracks that have already done the rounds on the underground house circuit are featured on the album. Tracks like ‘Happiness’, the big hit from the DJs At Work compilation album, ‘Love Life Generation – House Generation’ and the deeper than deep soulful classic ‘Music’ which was included on Keith Thompson’s ‘Worlds Collide Volume 1’.
One listen to this album and you’ll see why it scooped the Best Dance Album award at the South African Music Awards.

Wish You Were Here
Black Coffee Lyrics

The color, the fight
Ambition so tall
Remind me of you
The frost in the morning
The steel birds and flies
The river 'til dawn
Reminds me of you
You hold your cards so close to your chest
That I give up the question no more
I let you unfold
I wanted to write you a letter or two
But the words wouldn't stay on the page
Oh, cling to an age
Oh, oh
Oh, woah, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, woah, oh
(I wish you were here
Wish you were here, wish you were here
I wish you were here
Wish you were here, wish you were here
I wish you were here
Wish you were here, wish you were here)
The first dawn of spring time
A season so new
I will think of you
I will hope for you
The risk in your countenance
The sun in your eyes
Well, I dream of you
My dreams are of you
If art is the question that made us look twice
Of all that is building inside
What would you say?
Oh, oh
Oh, woah, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, woah, oh
The lyrics to Black Coffee's "Wish You Were Here" describe the artist's longing and nostalgia for someone who is no longer with them. The tags on the city walls, the color, and the fight all remind them of this person, as does the ambition they see around them. The frost in the morning, the steel birds and flies, and the river 'til dawn all also remind the artist of this person they miss. The second verse seems to be about the artist's attempts to communicate with this person, perhaps through writing letters. It's unclear whether these letters were never sent or if they were sent but the recipient didn't respond. The artist's dreams are also consumed by thoughts of this person.
The chorus, which repeats the lines "I wish you were here," conveys the artist's deep yearning for this person to be back in their life. The final lines of the song are a question posed to this absent person: "If art is the question that made us look twice/of all that is building inside/what would you say?" This may suggest that the artist and this person shared an appreciation for art and creativity, and that the artist is wondering how this person would respond to their current creative projects.
Overall, "Wish You Were Here" is a melancholic and introspective song that captures the feeling of missing someone deeply. The repetition of the chorus underscores the depth of the artist's longing, while the verses offer glimpses into the kinds of memories and associations that keep this person ever-present in the artist's mind.

CAUTION: LONG A** READ
Overall, I feel the song is about - the usual - a relationship at an end and the vestigial feelings conflicting with the reality of moving on.
This is best described in the lyrics, “The first storm of spring time, A season so new,” which show how the person in the song has braved an emotional winter of sorts. However, even as spring rolls by, every now and then their emotions get cloudy and flashes of the relationship past ripple through their mind. As they come to terms with moving on, they still hope somehow that things could work out - maybe in the future - as they make the assertion that “I will think of you, I will hope for you.”
They apparently say that being separated from someone dear to you whilst they are alive is as painful - maybe more so - than the finality of being separated from someone who has died. I can’t tell if the artist sings of someone who is dead or alive, because there was a shot of the girl in a tub with flowers on her chest which could suggest a funeral of sorts. (3:54) If you’re in a season of grief/loss (or you’ve ever been in that season), you’ll understand how easy it is to gravitate towards songs like these. I think it’s how the heart tries to self medicate and find healing.
The person in the song, represented by the guy in the video, is still very much hung up on (or in love with) their ex - the girl in the video. While it’s can be painful to remember what once is and isn’t anymore, both song and video use a lot of imagery to highlight what the singer loved about their ex and the moments and things that they shared.
Anyways, we start off with him sitting on a couch reminiscing over a picture. A couch situated at the bottom of an empty pool. I would liken this to be a metaphor of what the relationship has come to, dry, desolate and empty - dead - and here he is right at the centre of it. The relationship is no more and he has a big vacuum to fill.
I’d like to mention that really oft used phrase, “When I close my eyes, all I see is you,” to lead into exploring the recurring visual of eyes being closed in this video. Because although the relationship is dead, his memories of the girl are very much alive, his feelings for the girl seem to live on and that’s the reality he evidently wants to engage in as by how he looks wistfully at a picture of her (0:10), how he listens to music at the back of the pick-up (0:18) or on the street when he is walking (0:35) and closes his eyes to imagine and to dream of her (0:24). The song supports that idea in, “Well, I dream of you, My dreams are of you.“ “The colour, the fight, ambition so tall, Remind me of you…” Lyrics like the ones just above alongside, “The sun in your eyes,” and talk about how graffiti around the city reminds the artist of their lover shows how much the artist considers their lover to represents a lot of vibrant life and freshness.
Overall, there is a very strong theme of things natural in this video, from the girls hair, the minimalistic makeup on the characters and shots where grassy fields or hills are in the backdrop and of course the scenes in the lake of him being held by his brothers. There is even use of nature to analogously describe his feelings as they come. The lyrics “The frost in the morning,….The reluctant dawn” show how he doesn’t want to welcome the acceptance/finality of the loss.
Anyways, he’s really eager to cling to that time he was with her and relives what seem to be memories of her constantly as echoed by the lyrics, “Oh cling to an age.” He desires a present with her so badly that in his present, even when he’s at work or doing his own thing, he looks to where she used to be, where she could be, where he wishes she could still be. (0:52 - 0:56) These memories and thoughts are probably what occupy his mind and keeps him from engaging in the present as seen in the scenes where he is either sitting on the sidelines (0:17) or looking distracted (1:02) or forsaking a game of cards to go off on his own (1:46) His disengaged self in this scenes perfectly contrast scenes where he is lively and energetic, scenes where she happens to be there. Take the afternoon from (2:43) where she is present. The sun is shining, his boys are lively, the drinks are out and there amongst his boys she stands by, dressed in yellow - even the car here was yellow - a colour which signifies happiness.
His time with her was a summer he continues to think of, even as he inevitably lets go. I think this just shows how it is normal to reminisce the good times - because they truly were just that, good. Letting go isn’t all that easy and this resonates with the lyrics, “The frost in the morning, Steel birds in flight, The reluctant dawn.” A new day is at a start and although it is cold, he is steeling himself to move forward even though reluctant.
The shots with the hands perfectly shows this. The first shot of them, (1:19) the hands are clasping and slipping, leaving only a centimetre between the tips - hesitation. The second time the hands are shown (1:53), they brush each other briefly and part fully - resolution. I consider this approximate halfway point to be the climax of the video.
From this point, asides from the afternoon party scene, the two characters are mostly in separate scenes or facing each other back to back it being almost halfway This is also basically the halfway point in the video and song and to me it shows that the climax for this relationship is to end. The girl is shown in a scene being braided in a homey setting looking resigned (2:05) whilst he stands alone just thinking after having walked away from his friends. (2:14) The immediate next shot is him also retreating to a homey setting with his (emotional) baggage which he puts down so he can scoop up two children who come running to welcome him. (2:27) This could symbolize how one goes back to the life they’ve always known, the life they’ve always called home after a relationship is done. Everybody goes back to settle with their own people.
P.S. The car. This is like a bonus theme that I sort of didn’t see coming at first.
I really don’t know if the change of the car in the chill out/vibe sessions was intentional but man if it was it was genius! To me, the change in car really epitomises one of the strongest lessons at the end of a really meaningful relationship, you gotta find a(nother) way to keep moving. The VW in the scenes where the girl was, whether it was for their private picnics or hangouts with the boys was the colour yellow, a colour which symbolises happiness for the good times when they were together. The sedan shown in 1:01, a part of his present and foreseeable future is a weird indistinguishable hue of grey or blue, which seems to resonate with the dullness he now faces with her out of his life. But he has to keep moving and on he shall.
If you have made it this far, you are strong. :) Thank you for reading.
