The band was initiated as a side project by Hughes and Bonamassa following a performance together in Los Angeles in November 2009, who on the advice of Shirley recruited Bonham and Sherinian later in the year. The name Black Country Communion is derived from the term Black Country, referring to the West Midlands area of England where Hughes and Bonham were brought up. The group's sound is intentionally reminiscent of popular classic rock groups of the 1970s, reflecting the previous work of frontman Hughes as well as the link between Bonham and his father John's band Led Zeppelin.
After disbanding Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham formed California Breed and Derek Sherinian joined Joe Bonamassa's touring band.
Their reunion album from 2017 is entitled BCC IV. It’s the first album to be released since the band’s breakup in 2013. Recorded in Malibu, California, with producer Kevin Shirley, released on September 22, 2017.
BCC IV expanded the combination of blues rock (Bonamassa’s solo work) and hard rock (Hughes’ previous work with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, and Bonham’s link with Led Zeppelin) that took place on the first three albums. It’s a high quality hard rock album that brings a great feeling that classic rock is alive and in good hands.
Recorded in only seven days, the band was careful enough not to repeat the previous albums. BCC IV sounds bolder with heavy riffs, undeniable hooks, melodic flair and infectious choruses. Kevin Shirley’s importance is huge by guiding the band into the right directions for the album’s best interest, and the result is spectacular.

Burn down the sun
How can you be so cold?
You left me here
All hope is gone
Where is the life I sold
I pray the dawn
Will break this spell
It took my breath
So hard I fell
Lost in a shell, ghostly
And the rain falls down
On this lonely child
And I could not feel
The fire
And I realize
This was meant to be
And I need some time
To grieve
And you fade so slowly
Now all that shines is gold
And I feel I'm dyin'
How can you be so cold?
When the sky in fallin'
Now that you're growin' old
And I feel that I'm dyin'
How can you feel so cold?
So slowly wake me
From my sleep
Here in this house I dwell
And I don't delay
The wound so deep
Down in this livin' hell
The lyrics to Black Country Communion's song "Cold" depict the agony of a relationship that has lost its spark. The singer is asking how their partner can be so cold to them, when all they want is for them to love them back. The lines "Take my eyes, burn down the sun" suggest that the singer is so hurt by their partner's coldness that they would rather not see the light of day. All hope seems to be gone, and they are left feeling lost and alone, unable to feel even the rain falling on them.
The chorus reveals that the singer realizes that this was meant to be, and they need time to grieve the loss of their relationship. However, their partner seems to be unaffected by their pain, and the singer wonders how they could be so cold. The line "Now all that shines is gold" could suggest that the partner has moved on and found someone else, leaving the singer behind to deal with the fallout. The singer is left feeling like they are dying, unable to escape the pain of their broken heart.
In the final verse, the singer laments how deep the wound of their failed relationship is, and how they dwell in this living hell. They are begging for their partner to wake them from their sleep, to bring them back to life and give them hope for the future. However, the partner remains cold and distant, leaving the singer to suffer alone.
Overall, "Cold" is a powerful song that perfectly encapsulates the pain of a failing relationship. The lyrics are beautifully written and express the pain and longing that anyone who has been in a bad relationship can relate to.
