The band was initiated as a side project by Hughes and Bonamassa following a performance together in Los Angeles in November 2009, who on the advice of Shirley recruited Bonham and Sherinian later in the year. The name Black Country Communion is derived from the term Black Country, referring to the West Midlands area of England where Hughes and Bonham were brought up. The group's sound is intentionally reminiscent of popular classic rock groups of the 1970s, reflecting the previous work of frontman Hughes as well as the link between Bonham and his father John's band Led Zeppelin.
After disbanding Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham formed California Breed and Derek Sherinian joined Joe Bonamassa's touring band.
Their reunion album from 2017 is entitled BCC IV. It’s the first album to be released since the band’s breakup in 2013. Recorded in Malibu, California, with producer Kevin Shirley, released on September 22, 2017.
BCC IV expanded the combination of blues rock (Bonamassa’s solo work) and hard rock (Hughes’ previous work with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, and Bonham’s link with Led Zeppelin) that took place on the first three albums. It’s a high quality hard rock album that brings a great feeling that classic rock is alive and in good hands.
Recorded in only seven days, the band was careful enough not to repeat the previous albums. BCC IV sounds bolder with heavy riffs, undeniable hooks, melodic flair and infectious choruses. Kevin Shirley’s importance is huge by guiding the band into the right directions for the album’s best interest, and the result is spectacular.
Smokestack Woman
Black Country Communion Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lost salvation
You give me
Somethin' I can't lose
No lip, no conversation
I'm on the tip
You light my fuse
I bleed with satisfaction
With this curse
I need some interaction
I live in sin
Smokestack woman
Gonna' shake my soul
Smokestack woman
Take me down to the hole
Smokestack woman
You know you're
Gonna' wake the dead
Wake the dead
I heard
You're a midnight flyer
What kind of world
Do you live in?
You're preachin'
To the choir
Mother dandelion
Fire child within
It serves me right to suffer
I live in sin
The song Smokestack Woman by Black Country Communion is a fiery rock anthem that oozes with raw sensuality and rebellion. The lyrics portray a deep yearning for something intense and forbidden, embodied by the elusive Smokestack Woman. The singer is not looking for a "lost salvation," but instead seeks the thrill and excitement that comes with indulging in sin and desire. The Smokestack Woman is a symbol of this darkness, offering the singer something he can't lose and lighting his fuse.
The lyrics are peppered with imagery of fire, bleeding, and suffering, all adding to the intense atmosphere of the song. The singer is consumed by his desire for the Smokestack Woman, needing her interaction to satisfy his urges. The line "Smokestack woman, gonna shake my soul" suggests a physical and emotional shaking or trembling, and the chorus repeats the motif of waking the dead, adding to the danger and excitement that the singer feels.
Overall, Smokestack Woman is a powerful and unapologetically passionate song that embraces the darker side of human desire. The lyrics describe a need for something that is dangerous and forbidden, and the Smokestack Woman is the embodiment of this temptation.

One of the best bands ever to take the stage in my opinion. I have been attending concerts since 1968 and listening to rock for 55 years. These guys got it.

Powerful !!!!!!!! Thanks for posting, bccommunion .

When I saw Joe's live blues act, I wasn't really impressed. Not because of Joe's playing, but because blues songs are standard 12-bar and 8-bar patterns, utilizing 3 main chords in the pattern, over and over. After two hours of the same over and over, it does get boring.
BCC is great rock - heavy rock. I call this "Bonamassa Unleashed". It's BY FAR his best work. Every song is great. While Joe already recorded 12 solo blues records (with low sales), he should have passed out a few xanax's, chilled out, and just rocked. Black Country Communion was the best rock band of the 2000's. If they would have stayed and played, they would have been legendary. Joe's best riffs, chord progressions, and solos are right here.

@John B That's because his mouth knows better LOL!

I agree with you! I don't dig most of Joe's solo efforts i hear that are not Traditional blues
He is infact a really talented blues singer with a resonant even and powerful voice, though there doesn't seem to be a lot of self written songs to really carry it for him ...
They really promoted Just got paid but I didn't care much for his version of ZZ Top "Just Got Paid " his playing kind of wanders and lacks bite. i don't think it has any of the edge BCC has .
This chemistry is unbelievable
It brought Joe to another level
And his is a blues pro without a doubt

it's funny because most of Joe's blues aren't standard 12-bar & 8 bar patters utilizing 3 main chords. he actually specifically says he doesn't like playing that style of blues as much. don't know what you were watching
